How do you measure a child's temperature with the Microlife MT 710 frog thermometer?
The Microlife MT 710 is a digital stick thermometer from the Swiss brand Microlife, designed in the shape of a frog to make measuring temperature less stressful for children. It is a mercury-free, clinically tested maximum thermometer for measuring body temperature orally, rectally or under the arm.
Its flexible soft-touch tip adapts to the body, which makes rectal measurement in babies and oral measurement in older children more comfortable. Orally and rectally the measurement takes about 30 seconds, and the end is signalled by a beep. When switched on, the thermometer shows the last measured value, so you can easily follow how the temperature changes.
According to the instruction manual, the MT 710 measures in the range of 32.0–43.9 °C with an accuracy of ±0.1 °C between 34 and 42 °C. It runs on a small LR41 button battery, performs an automatic self-test each time it is switched on and turns itself off after about 10 minutes.
Key benefits:
- Child-friendly frog design that makes measuring easier.
- Flexible soft-touch tip for more comfortable measurement.
- Approx. 30 seconds for oral and rectal measurement, with a beep at the end.
- Accuracy of ±0.1 °C between 34 and 42 °C.
- Memory of the last measurement.
- Mercury-free, clinically tested, automatic self-test and switch-off.

| Measuring range | 32.0–43.9 °C (below 32.0 °C the display shows “-- -”, above 43.9 °C “H”) |
| Accuracy | ±0.1 °C between 34 and 42 °C; ±0.2 °C outside this range |
| Memory | Last measured value, shown with “M” when switched on |
| Signals and functions | Beeper at the end of measurement, automatic self-test, low-battery indicator, auto switch-off after approx. 10 minutes |
| Tip | Flexible soft-touch tip |
| Battery | LR41 (1.5 V) or SR41 (1.55 V), approx. 4,500 measurements |
| Protection | IP22 – the probe can be disinfected, but the thermometer is not waterproof |
| Design | Frog-shaped, mercury-free, clinically tested |
Normal values differ depending on the measuring site. The manual lists the following ranges: under the arm 34.7–37.3 °C, orally 35.5–37.5 °C and rectally 36.6–38.0 °C. For this reason, always compare readings taken at the same site.
How to use
Press the ON/OFF button. The display briefly shows the last measurement with “M”, and the thermometer performs a self-test. When “°C” flashes, it is ready to measure. The measurement is finished when the beep sounds and “°C” stops flashing.
- Rectally: insert the tip 2–3 cm into the anus; using a probe cover and a little lubricant is recommended. Measuring takes about 30 seconds. This is the usual method for babies and small children.
- Orally: do not eat or drink anything hot or cold for 10 minutes before measuring and keep the mouth closed for 2 minutes. Place the tip in one of the pockets under the tongue, close the mouth and breathe through the nose. Measuring takes about 30 seconds.
- Under the arm: dry the armpit, place the tip in the centre of the armpit touching the skin and hold the arm against the body. Wait at least 3–5 minutes, regardless of the beep.
- After use, clean the probe with a cloth or swab moistened with 70% isopropyl alcohol, wiping from the end of the probe towards the tip. Do not immerse the display and never boil the thermometer.
Who is it for?
The MT 710 is intended for home use, primarily for families with babies and young children, for whom the frog shape and flexible tip make measuring easier. It can also be used to measure the temperature of older children and adults orally, rectally or under the arm. It is not intended for professional use.
Important notes
- The thermometer reading is not a diagnosis. If a baby has a fever, if the fever is high or lasts long, or if the child seems unwell, contact a paediatrician.
- Do not measure rectally in people with rectal disorders. If you are unsure how to measure rectally, ask a healthcare professional for guidance.
- Children should not use the thermometer unsupervised – small parts (battery, cover) can be swallowed.
- Do not bend the probe more than 45°, protect the thermometer from impacts and do not expose it to temperatures above 60 °C.
- The thermometer is not waterproof (IP22). Microlife recommends an accuracy check every two years or after a fall.
Pharmacist's advice:
With babies, rectal measurement gives the most reliable result. Put a little petroleum jelly or lubricant on the tip, lay the baby on its back with legs raised or on its tummy across your lap and insert the tip no more than 2–3 cm. The flexible tip of the MT 710 makes this more comfortable, but hold the baby firmly so it does not move suddenly.
Under the arm, the beep only shows that the temperature has stopped rising quickly – for a reliable value, leave the thermometer in place for at least 3–5 minutes. Always write down the time and site of measurement, because values from different sites differ. If a baby under three months has an elevated temperature, or if a child has a high fever, difficulty breathing or seems lethargic, contact a doctor straight away.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
1. How long does it take to measure with the MT 710?
Orally and rectally, measurement takes about 30 seconds and the end is signalled by a beep. Under the arm, the manual recommends waiting at least 3–5 minutes regardless of the beep.
2. Which measuring method is best for babies?
For babies and small children, rectal measurement is usually used because it gives the most reliable result. The flexible tip of the MT 710 makes this more comfortable. Insert the tip only 2–3 cm.
3. Is the MT 710 waterproof?
No. The thermometer has IP22 protection. The probe can be cleaned with 70% isopropyl alcohol or immersed in it up to the display, but the display must not be immersed and the thermometer must not be boiled.
4. How do I change the battery?
The MT 710 uses an LR41 (1.5 V) or SR41 (1.55 V) button battery, enough for about 4,500 measurements. Remove the battery compartment cover and insert a new battery of the same type with the “+” side up. A triangle symbol on the display warns that the battery is low.
