Fluimucil oral solution contains acetylcysteine, a mucolytic – an expectorant medicine that thins thick, sticky mucus and helps clear it from the airways.
Each 5 mL of solution contains 100 mg acetylcysteine. The solution is clear, raspberry-flavoured and supplied in a 100 mL glass bottle with a graduated measuring cup. According to the ALIMS list of medicines with a changed name (05–07/2026), this form has been called Fluimucil® za decu (“for children”) since 2026 (same authorisation, same composition). Fluimucil 100 mg and 200 mg granules and Fluimucil 600 mg effervescent tablets are separate medicines with their own leaflets.
Important warning
- Supply status: non-prescription medicine (OTC).
- It must not be given to children under 2 years – in them mucolytics can cause airway obstruction.
- Do not take it together with cough suppressants (antitussives), because the thinned mucus may build up in the airways.
- If symptoms persist after 5–10 days or get worse, see a doctor; treatment longer than 10 days must be prescribed by a doctor. In asthma, stop immediately if breathing difficulties occur.
- This page is for information only and is not an offer to buy the medicine online.

What is Fluimucil oral solution used for?
According to the package leaflet, Fluimucil oral solution is used to treat respiratory disorders with excessive production of thick, viscous mucus in children from 2 years of age, adolescents and adults.
If symptoms persist or worsen after 5–10 days, a doctor should be consulted.
How is it taken and dosed?
Shake the bottle before use. Measure the dose with the measuring cup provided. Recommended doses according to the leaflet:
| Group | Recommended dose |
|---|---|
| Adults | 10 mL (1 measuring cup = 200 mg acetylcysteine), 2–3 times a day |
| Children over 2 years | 5 mL (½ measuring cup = 100 mg acetylcysteine), 2–4 times a day depending on age |
| Children under 2 years | must not be given |
- Treatment lasts 5 to 10 days; treatment longer than 10 days must be prescribed by a doctor.
- After first opening, the bottle can be used for 10 days (stored below 25 °C).
- Mixing other medicines with the oral solution is not recommended.
- A faint sulphur smell is typical of acetylcysteine and does not mean the medicine has changed.
Special patient groups
- Children: the medicine is intended for children from 2 years of age; it must not be used in younger children, who because of the structure of their airways cannot cough up the thinned mucus effectively.
- Older people and people with a weak cough: people with reduced respiratory function and a reduced ability to cough up mucus should consult a doctor before use; if needed, respiratory physiotherapy (postural drainage, suction of secretions) is used together with the medicine.
Contraindications – when the medicine must not be used
Do not take Fluimucil oral solution:
- if you are allergic to acetylcysteine or any of the ingredients;
- if you are pregnant or breast-feeding (self-medication; see the pregnancy section);
- in children under 2 years.
Warnings and precautions
Use the medicine with caution and under medical supervision if you or your child:
- have bronchial asthma – stop treatment immediately and see a doctor if breathing difficulty, bronchospasm or worsening of the disease occurs;
- have or have had a stomach or duodenal ulcer, or take medicines that damage the stomach;
- have histamine intolerance (hypersensitivity reactions are possible).
At the start of treatment the mucus may become thinner and increase in volume. Acetylcysteine can affect some blood and urine tests (salicylates, ketone bodies) – tell your doctor you are taking it before laboratory tests. The solution contains sodium (19.1 mg per 5 mL; 38.2 mg per 10 mL), sodium benzoate, methyl parahydroxybenzoate (may cause allergic reactions, possibly delayed), propylene glycol and small amounts of ethanol (38.5 mg per 100 mL).
Interactions with other medicines, food and drink
Tell your doctor or pharmacist about all medicines you take. According to the leaflet:
- antitussives (cough suppressants) – do not take at the same time because of possible mucus build-up;
- antibiotics – take them separately from Fluimucil, at least 2 hours apart (does not apply to loracarbef);
- activated charcoal – may reduce the effect of the medicine;
- nitroglycerin – taking both may cause a marked drop in blood pressure and headache.
Pregnancy and breast-feeding
- Pregnancy and breast-feeding: do not take the medicine on your own initiative. If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, Fluimucil may be taken only if prescribed by a doctor and under direct medical supervision.
Driving and using machines
Fluimucil has no effect on the ability to drive and use machines.
Possible side effects
According to the leaflet, the following may occur:
- uncommon (up to 1 in 100 people): allergic reactions, headache, ringing in the ears, fast heartbeat, vomiting, diarrhoea, inflammation of the mouth lining, stomach pain, nausea, hives, rash, angioedema (swelling of the face, lips, throat or tongue), itching, fever, drop in blood pressure;
- rare (up to 1 in 1,000): bronchospasm, shortness of breath, indigestion;
- very rare (up to 1 in 10,000): severe allergic reaction (anaphylactic shock), bleeding;
- frequency not known: bronchial obstruction, facial swelling.
Very rare cases of serious skin reactions (Stevens-Johnson and Lyell syndromes) have been reported. If any changes in the skin or mucous membranes occur, or if bleeding time is prolonged, stop using the medicine and see your doctor.
Overdose, missed dose and stopping treatment
- Overdose: nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea may occur. If you have accidentally taken the medicine or a larger dose, tell your doctor immediately or go to the nearest hospital.
- Missed dose: do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
- Duration and stopping: treatment lasts 5–10 days; if symptoms persist, recur more often or worsen, see your doctor.
When to seek medical help immediately?
- difficulty breathing, wheezing or a feeling of choking (especially in asthma);
- swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, hives or a severe allergic reaction;
- blisters, peeling skin or changes of the mucous membranes of the mouth, eyes and genitals;
- unusual bleeding;
- high fever, difficulty breathing or a child’s condition getting worse despite treatment.
Pharmacist's advice
Fluimucil thins the mucus so that the body can clear it more easily – drink enough fluids and do not combine it with syrups that suppress coughing. It is not given to children under 2; for an older child always measure the dose with the cup provided.
Write the opening date on the bottle – after 10 days the solution should no longer be used. If a child has asthma, watch their breathing and stop immediately if wheezing or breathing difficulty appears. If an antibiotic is prescribed, give it at least 2 hours apart from Fluimucil.
