The skin covers the entire body and is one of the largest organ systems of the human body. The total skin area of an adult human is between 1.5 and 2 square meters. The thickness of the skin is variable and ranges from 0.5 to 4 millimeters. It is thinnest on the eyelids and thickest on the palms and heels. The skin has three layers: epidermis, dermis and hypodermis. The most numerous cells of the epidermis are keratinocytes, and in addition there are melanocytes (pigment cells), Langerhans cells and Merkel cells. The dermis consists of a papillary part and a reticular part that differ in cell density and connective tissue. The hypodermis is mainly fatty tissue.
