What makes the Microlife MT 50 a practical everyday thermometer?

Microlife MT 50 is a compact digital stick thermometer from the Swiss brand Microlife for measuring body temperature orally, rectally or under the arm. It is a maximum thermometer – it shows the highest temperature reached during the measurement.

Its main practical advantage is water resistance: according to the official instructions for use, MT 50 is rated IP67, and the whole thermometer can be disinfected by immersing it in 70% isopropyl alcohol. This makes hygienic cleaning easy when several family members use the same thermometer.

An oral or rectal measurement takes about one minute. The end of the measurement is shown on the display when the °C symbol stops flashing, and the last reading stays in memory. The thermometer runs on one LR41 button battery, which according to Microlife lasts for about 4,500 measurements.

The thermometer meets the European standard for clinical thermometers EN 12470-3 and performs a self-test every time it is switched on; if "ERR" appears, it must not be used.

How to use

Switch the thermometer on with the ON/OFF button and wait until it is ready to measure. Then measure according to the method you have chosen:

Oral (about 1 minute): place the tip under the tongue, close your mouth and breathe through the nose. Do not eat or drink anything hot or cold for 10 minutes beforehand.
Rectal (about 1 minute): carefully insert the tip 2–3 cm into the anus.
Underarm (at least 5 minutes): place the tip in the armpit and keep the arm pressed to the body.
The measurement is finished when the °C symbol stops flashing (the temperature has risen by less than 0.1 °C in 16 seconds).
To view the last reading, hold the ON/OFF button for more than 3 seconds when switching on – the value is shown with the letter "M".

Who is it for?

MT 50 is intended for adults and children for measuring body temperature at home. It is especially practical for families who share one thermometer, because it can be disinfected completely. According to Microlife, rectal measurement in children under 3 years should only be performed by trained healthcare staff.

Important notes

Disinfection: wipe the thermometer with a 70% isopropyl alcohol swab from the middle towards the tip, or immerse it in 70% isopropyl alcohol for at least 5 minutes (up to 24 hours), then let it air-dry for 1 minute. Never boil it.
Use only in the mouth, rectum or armpit – not in the ear or at other sites. No rectal measurement in people with rectal disorders.
Do not leave children alone with the thermometer – it contains small parts that can be swallowed.
Microlife recommends an accuracy check every two years or after a fall.
A temperature reading is not a diagnosis. In case of high or persistent fever, contact a doctor.

Pharmacist's advice:

Choose one measuring method and stick to it during an illness, because normal values differ: according to Microlife, about 35.5–37.5 °C orally, 36.6–38.0 °C rectally and 34.7–37.3 °C under the arm. Write the values down with the time – that makes it much easier to see how the fever is developing.

The great advantage of MT 50 is that it can be disinfected completely. If several family members use it, disinfect it after every use and store it clean and dry. Do not use it on babies rectally yourself – for small children, a non-contact forehead or ear thermometer is a convenient alternative.
