Electric Blankets and Heating Pads – Medisana Heat Pads
An electric blanket or heating pad gives even, adjustable warmth – for warming the bed, relaxing tense back and neck muscles and comfort on cold days. This category is part of Medical devices for home use and offers models from the German manufacturer Medisana: heating pads in several sizes, a neck and back pad, electric blankets and an electric underblanket.
Compared with a hot-water bottle, a heating pad keeps the same temperature throughout use, the level is set on the controller, and there is no risk of spilling hot water.

How to choose
- Size – a 40 × 30 cm pad for local use, XXL or neck and back pad for a larger area, a blanket for the whole body, an underblanket for the bed
- Heat settings – 3 or 4 levels let you adjust warmth to your skin sensitivity
- Automatic switch-off – check the switch-off time in the manual; especially important if warmth makes you drowsy
- Care – on many models the controller detaches, so the pad or blanket can be washed according to the care label
Safe use
- Do not use the pad or blanket folded, creased or fastened with pins
- Do not use on babies, small children or people who cannot feel heat or switch the device off themselves
- People with diabetes, nerve damage or poor circulation should use the lowest setting and check their skin often
- People with implanted medical devices (e.g. a pacemaker) should consult a doctor and read the manual before use
- Do not leave the device on unattended and do not sleep on the highest setting
For a fresh injury, swelling or bruising, cooling helps in the first days – see ice packs and cold compresses. Alongside warmth, for muscle relaxation see massage creams.
Pharmacist's adviceWarmth is soothing for tense muscles and chronic back pain, but it should not be applied to a fresh injury, a swollen or red joint or damaged skin – cooling is better then. Start on the lowest setting and increase gradually. If back pain comes with numbness in the legs, weakness, fever or pain that does not ease at rest, see a doctor. For period cramps a warm pad on the tummy is a simple aid, but severe recurring pain needs an examination. |

Frequently asked questions
Is an electric blanket safe?
Yes, when used as instructed: unfolded, without pins, with automatic switch-off and not on babies or people who cannot switch it off themselves. A damaged cable or controller means the device should no longer be used.
What is the difference between an electric blanket and an underblanket?
An electric blanket is used to cover yourself, e.g. on the sofa. An underblanket goes under the sheet and warms the bed before sleeping.
Can a heating pad be washed?
On many Medisana models the controller detaches, so the pad or blanket can be washed according to the care label. It must be completely dry before switching on again.
Heating pad or hot-water bottle – which is better?
A heating pad keeps a constant, adjustable temperature with no risk of spilling hot water. A hot-water bottle is handy when there is no socket nearby.
