Why is the Microlife NEB 410 nebuliser suitable for children?

The Microlife NEB 410 is a compressor (piston) nebuliser for home inhalation therapy, designed in the shape of a friendly elephant to make inhalation more pleasant for children. Microlife introduced it as its children's nebuliser, but it can be used by the whole family – children from 2 years, adolescents and adults.

Technically it matches Microlife's family nebulisers: a nebulisation rate of 0.4 ml/min and an MMAD of 2.83 µm, with a respirable fraction of 63.3%, so the aerosol reaches both the upper and the lower respiratory tract. A holder on the back of the device keeps the nebuliser in place between uses.

The set contains a child and an adult mask, a mouthpiece, a nosepiece, an air hose, five replacement filters and a carrying bag. The device is operated with one button, and all nebuliser parts can be washed and disinfected.

How to use

Use only inhalation solutions or medicines recommended by your doctor, in the prescribed amount.

Assemble the nebuliser, fill it with the solution without exceeding the maximum mark (8 ml) and connect it to the compressor with the air hose.
Sit the child upright at a table – not in an armchair and not lying down.
Switch on the device; the child breathes calmly through the mask or mouthpiece.
After the session, switch off, empty any leftover solution and clean the parts.
After 30 minutes of operation, let the device rest for 30 minutes.

Who is it for?

The NEB 410 is intended for inhalation therapy at home for children from 2 years of age, as well as for adolescents and adults – for example in asthma, chronic bronchitis or other respiratory conditions for which a doctor has prescribed inhalation. Children must always inhale under adult supervision.

Important notes

Not intended for quick-relief medication during a life-threatening asthma attack – in that case seek urgent medical help.
Not suitable for anaesthesia or ventilator systems; check the leaflet of the inhaled medicine for contraindications.
Clean the nebuliser, masks, mouthpiece and nosepiece in warm water with a mild detergent; the nebuliser, mouthpiece and nosepiece can be disinfected by boiling for 5 minutes, but masks must not be boiled.
Replace the air filter about every 200 operating hours or once a year (sooner if it is grey, brown or wet), and the nebuliser every 6–12 months; never use the device without a filter.
Never immerse the compressor in water; keep children away from the cord and tubing when the device is not in use.

Pharmacist's advice:

The elephant design helps, but what matters most is that the child is calm: let them touch the device and the mask beforehand, and inhale together with a story or a favourite song. The mask should fit snugly over the nose and mouth – a crying child or a mask held loosely in front of the face delivers much less medicine. Older children can switch to the mouthpiece, which delivers the aerosol more efficiently. After each session, wipe the child's face and, after inhaled corticosteroids, give them some water to rinse the mouth.
