How does the Microlife NC 400 measure a child's temperature without contact?

The Microlife NC 400 is an infrared non-contact thermometer with a playful dolphin-shaped design, made to make taking a child's temperature more pleasant. It measures body temperature on the forehead from a distance of up to 5 cm, without touching the skin, so it can be used even while a child is asleep.

A reading takes about 3 seconds. A blue tracking light shows the correct measuring spot and distance, the display is illuminated, and the Silent Glow colour fever alarm lights green for normal readings and red from 37.5 °C. The beeper can be switched off for quiet night-time measurements.

Besides body mode, the thermometer has an object mode for measuring the surface temperature of, for example, a baby bottle or bath water, as well as room temperature. It stores the last 30 readings with date and time.

How to use

Before measuring, the child and the thermometer should be in the same room for at least 30 minutes. Do not measure during or right after feeding, eating, drinking or physical activity.

Remove the protective cap and press START/IO; wait until the °C symbol flashes and the beep sounds.
Brush hair away from the forehead and wipe off any sweat or dirt.
Aim the thermometer at the centre of the forehead from a distance of no more than 5 cm.
Press START/IO and keep the blue tracking light in the centre of the forehead until the long beep (about 3 seconds).
Read the result; wait until the symbol flashes again before the next reading.

Who is it for?

The NC 400 is intended for the whole family and is particularly practical for children, because measurement is quick and contact-free. For newborns in the first 6 months, Microlife recommends rectal measurement and verifying non-contact readings with it.

Important notes

The reading is not a diagnosis – consult a doctor if the result does not match the symptoms.
In the early phase of a fever, readings can be unusually low; repeat the measurement every 15 minutes or check with a core-temperature thermometer.
For children under three with a weakened immune system, or if the reading seems too low, take three measurements and use the highest.
The thermometer is not a toy; children must not use it unsupervised.
Clean the casing and sensor with a cloth moistened with 70% isopropyl alcohol; never immerse the device in water.

Pharmacist's advice:

Non-contact thermometers are very sensitive to the conditions in which you measure. Do not measure a child who has just come in from the cold or out of a warm bed – wait a few minutes, and make sure the forehead is dry and free of hair. If the result surprises you, measure two or three times and compare. A high temperature in a baby under three months, a fever that lasts longer than three days or a child who is drowsy and unwell are reasons to call a doctor regardless of the exact number.

1. At what distance should I hold the thermometer?

No more than 5 cm from the centre of the forehead. The blue tracking light helps you find the right spot and distance.

2. Can I measure while my child is asleep?

Yes. The measurement is contact-free and the beeper can be switched off, so you can measure without waking the child.

3. What do the colours on the display mean?

Green indicates a reading below 37.5 °C; red indicates a reading of 37.5 °C or higher, together with an acoustic alarm if sound is on.

4. Is it suitable for newborns?

It can be used, but for babies in the first 6 months Microlife recommends rectal measurement and checking non-contact readings against it.
