Monkasta contains montelukast, a leukotriene receptor antagonist (ATC R03DC03). Leukotrienes cause narrowing and swelling of the airways; by blocking their action, Monkasta improves asthma symptoms and helps keep asthma under control.
The medicine is registered in three age-adapted forms: 10 mg film-coated tablets (adults and adolescents from 15 years), 5 mg chewable tablets (children aged 6 to 14) and 4 mg chewable tablets (children aged 2 to 5). Monkasta is taken every day, long-term, and is not used to stop an acute asthma attack.
Important warning
- Monkasta is a prescription-only medicine (regime R).
- The medicine does not treat an acute asthma attack – always keep the quick-relief inhaler prescribed by your doctor at hand.
- Monkasta does not replace other prescribed asthma medicines (e.g. inhaled corticosteroids).
- In case of changes in behaviour and mood (aggression, depression, nightmares, suicidal thoughts), contact a doctor immediately.
- Read the package leaflet before use. This page is for information only and is not an offer to buy the medicine online.

Pharmacist's advice
Take the tablet every evening at about the same time – for children it is practical to link it to the bedtime routine, but give the chewable tablet at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after dinner. Monkasta does not work immediately: the quick-relief inhaler should still always be at hand.
Parents should watch the child’s sleep and mood (nightmares, restlessness, irritability) and report any change to the doctor. When asthma is accompanied by hay fever, regular nasal rinsing with saline or sea water can also help.
Availability and price
Monkasta is a prescription-only medicine and cannot be bought online. No price is shown on this page.
