Prospan 7 mg/mL syrup is a herbal medicine containing dry ivy leaf extract. It is used as an expectorant to make coughing up mucus easier in adults, adolescents and children aged two years and over who have a productive cough.
The medicine helps loosen thick mucus in the airways and makes it easier to clear by coughing. One millilitre of syrup contains 7 mg of dry ivy leaf extract. This page refers to the pack containing 200 mL of syrup.
Important: The information on this page does not replace advice from a doctor or pharmacist. Use this medicine according to the official package leaflet or the advice of a healthcare professional. Consult a doctor if the cough lasts longer than seven days, becomes worse or is accompanied by difficulty breathing, fever or purulent sputum.

What is Prospan syrup used for?
Prospan syrup is used as an expectorant for a productive cough, meaning a cough accompanied by mucus or phlegm.
Dry ivy leaf extract helps loosen thick mucus in the airways and makes it easier to cough up.
Prospan is not automatically suitable for every type of cough. A dry, irritating cough without mucus may require a different approach. Ask a doctor or pharmacist for advice if you are unsure about the type of cough.
Medical assessment is needed: Do not rely only on symptomatic treatment if difficulty or rapid breathing, fever, purulent or bloody sputum, chest pain or a worsening general condition develops.
How is Prospan syrup taken?
Always take this medicine exactly as stated in the official package leaflet or as advised by your doctor or pharmacist.
Children aged 2 to 5 years:
- 2.5 mL of syrup twice daily;
- the total daily dose is 5 mL.
Children aged 6 to 11 years:
- 5 mL of syrup twice daily;
- the total daily dose is 10 mL.
Adolescents aged 12 years and over, adults and older people:
- 5 mL of syrup three times daily;
- the total daily dose is 15 mL.
Measure the syrup using the dosing measure supplied with the bottle. Shake the bottle well before every dose.
Duration of use: Consult a doctor or pharmacist if symptoms last longer than seven days while using Prospan. Do not increase the dose or extend treatment on your own.
Use in children
Prospan syrup is intended for children aged two years and over, adolescents and adults.
The medicine must not be given to children under two years of age because secretolytic cough medicines may worsen respiratory symptoms in this age group.
A persistent or recurrent cough in a child aged two to four years requires medical assessment and diagnosis before treatment is started.
When must Prospan not be taken?
Do not use this medicine:
- if you are allergic to ivy leaf;
- if you are allergic to other plants in the Araliaceae family;
- if you are allergic to any of the other ingredients;
- in children under two years of age;
- if you have hereditary fructose intolerance.
Warnings and precautions
Speak to a doctor or pharmacist before taking Prospan if you have gastritis or a stomach ulcer.
Contact a healthcare professional if any of the following occur:
- difficulty breathing or rapid breathing;
- fever;
- purulent or bloody sputum;
- a worsening cough;
- a cough lasting longer than seven days;
- signs of a serious allergic reaction.
Taking Prospan together with cough suppressants such as codeine or dextromethorphan is not recommended without prior medical advice.
Important information about some ingredients
Prospan syrup contains sorbitol:
- 0.963 g of sorbitol in 2.5 mL of syrup;
- 1.93 g of sorbitol in 5 mL of syrup.
Sorbitol is a source of fructose and may cause gastrointestinal discomfort and a mild laxative effect. Speak to a doctor before use if you or your child have been told that you cannot tolerate certain sugars.
The sorbitol content may affect the availability of other oral medicines taken at the same time.
The medicine contains a small amount of ethanol from the cherry flavour, less than 100 mg per dose.
Interactions with other medicines
Interaction studies have not been performed and no specific interactions are currently known.
Nevertheless, tell your doctor or pharmacist about all medicines you are taking, including medicines obtained without a prescription.
Do not combine Prospan with cough suppressants such as codeine or dextromethorphan without medical advice. Suppressing the cough reflex may make it harder to clear loosened mucus.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask a doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.
Use of Prospan syrup during pregnancy and breastfeeding is not recommended because there are insufficient safety data on ivy leaf extract in pregnant and breastfeeding women.
Driving and using machines
No studies have been conducted on the effects of the medicine on the ability to drive or use machines.
Possible side effects
Like all medicines, Prospan syrup may cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
Side effects of unknown frequency include:
- nausea;
- vomiting;
- diarrhoea;
- hives;
- skin rash;
- difficulty breathing;
- anaphylactic reactions.
Seek emergency medical help: Stop taking the medicine and get immediate help if swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, difficulty breathing or swallowing, widespread hives or other signs of a serious allergic reaction occur.
Tell a doctor or pharmacist about any suspected side effect.
What if too much Prospan is taken?
Do not exceed the recommended daily dose.
Taking more than recommended may cause:
- nausea;
- vomiting;
- diarrhoea;
- restlessness or agitation.
Contact a doctor if you or a child have taken more syrup than recommended.
What if a dose is forgotten?
Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose. Continue according to the usual schedule or the instructions given by your doctor.
How should Prospan syrup be stored?
- Keep out of the sight and reach of children.
- Store at a temperature of up to 25 °C.
- After first opening, the syrup may be used for up to three months.
- Continue to store below 25 °C after opening.
- Do not use after the expiry date stated on the package.
Do not dispose of unused medicines through wastewater or household waste. Return them to a pharmacy that collects unused medicines from the public.

Pharmacist’s advice
Pharmacist’s advice: Prospan is intended for a productive cough with mucus. Do not automatically use it for a dry, irritating cough and do not combine it with medicines that suppress the cough reflex without professional advice, as this may make mucus harder to clear.
Shake the bottle well before every use and measure the dose with the supplied dosing measure rather than a household spoon. A persistent or recurrent cough in a child aged two to four years should be assessed before treatment.
Contact a doctor if fever, difficulty breathing or purulent sputum develops, or if the cough lasts longer than seven days.
