Menopause is the final menstrual period; it is confirmed once periods have been absent for 12 months in a row – most often around the age of 50. The years before and after are accompanied by hot flushes, night sweats, poorer sleep, mood changes and mucosal dryness.

• if you have had breast or uterine cancer or take tamoxifen – phytoestrogens only with your doctor’s approval
• when symptoms seriously disrupt sleep and daily life – discuss hormone therapy with a gynaecologist
• with liver disease, or if you notice dark urine and yellowing of the skin
