Cough syrup – how to choose the right one for dry and productive cough in adults and children
Cough syrup should be chosen according to the type of cough: it is not the same if you have a dry, irritating cough without mucus or a productive cough with phlegm that needs to be loosened and cleared from the airways. Coughing is a natural defensive reflex that helps the body clear the respiratory tract, but when it lasts for days, disturbs sleep or occurs in children, it is important to choose the right approach.
The most common mistake is taking “any cough syrup” without distinguishing whether you need a syrup for dry cough, a syrup for expectoration or a product that soothes an irritated throat. Below we explain how to recognize the type of cough, which cough syrup makes sense in each situation, what can be used in adults and children and when medical advice is needed.

Dry or productive cough – how to recognize yours?
Cough is most often divided into dry cough and productive cough. This difference is important because the same products are not used to calm irritation and to help clear mucus.
Dry cough is an irritating cough without phlegm. It often occurs in attacks, may be worse at night, and patients describe it as tickling in the throat and a cough that “cannot be stopped”. It may occur after a cold, due to throat irritation, dry air, smoke, allergy or mucus dripping from the nose into the throat.
Productive cough is a cough with mucus. In this case, the goal is to loosen and clear the mucus, not to completely suppress the cough reflex. For this type of cough, mucolytics and expectorants are most often used — products commonly requested as syrup for expectoration or syrup for clearing phlegm in adults.
| Type of cough | What does it feel like? | Main goal |
|---|---|---|
| Dry cough | Irritation, tickling in the throat, cough without mucus, often at night. | Calm the irritation and protect the throat mucosa. |
| Productive cough | Cough with mucus, feeling of phlegm in the chest or throat. | Loosen mucus and make expectoration easier. |
Which cough syrup should you choose?
The right cough syrup depends on whether the cough needs to be calmed or whether the body needs help clearing mucus. Before buying a product, tell your pharmacist whether there is phlegm, how long the cough has lasted, whether it occurs at night, whether there is fever, chest pain, breathing difficulty, allergy, current medication and whether the patient is a child.
Syrup for dry cough
Syrup for dry cough is used when the cough is irritating, without mucus and exhausting, especially at night. This group includes antitussives, which reduce the cough reflex, as well as herbal syrups and products that coat the mucosa and help relieve scratching, hoarseness and irritation.
For adults looking for the best syrup for dry cough, there is no single universal answer. The choice depends on the cause of the cough, intensity of symptoms, existing conditions and medicines the person already uses. Products such as Levopront, Omnitus or herbal syrups for dry cough should be chosen according to the type of cough and with advice from a pharmacist or doctor.
Syrup for productive cough and expectoration
In productive cough, the goal is not to completely “stop” the cough, but to loosen the mucus and make it easier to clear. This is why mucolytics and expectorants are used — products that patients usually ask for as syrup for expectoration, syrup for clearing phlegm in adults or expectoration syrup for children.
This group includes products such as Flavamed oral solution, Bisolvon, Fluimucil, Prospan, Prospera, Timal and herbal syrups with ivy, thyme, primrose or plantain. With productive cough, adequate fluid intake is also important because without fluids, mucus remains thick and harder to clear.

Cough syrup for children – what should you pay attention to?
Cough syrup for children should not be chosen only because “it helped someone else”, because in children special attention is paid to age, body weight, type of cough, duration of symptoms and accompanying signs. Dosage must be strictly according to the product leaflet or the advice of a pediatrician/pharmacist.
You can review the category cough syrups for children, but in small children, babies, fever, breathing difficulty or recurring cough, medical examination has priority over self-treatment.
Honey is not recommended for children under one year of age. In older children, it may help soothe throat irritation, but it does not replace medical examination if the child breathes with difficulty, has a high fever, refuses fluids, is very weak or the cough lasts longer.
How to calm night cough in children?
Night cough in children often becomes worse when the child lies down, especially if nasal mucus drips down the back of the throat. Ventilating the room, humidifying the air, sufficient fluid intake, rinsing the nose with saline solution and slightly raising the head in older children may help.
If the child has a dry irritating cough that wakes them up, a pharmacist may recommend an appropriate syrup for dry cough or a throat-soothing product, but only after checking the child’s age. If cough is accompanied by fever, wheezing, rapid breathing or returns every night, a doctor should be consulted.
Natural remedy for dry cough
When people search for a natural remedy for dry cough, they usually mean honey, marshmallow root, Iceland moss, ivy, bay leaf, onion, warm drinks and products that coat the throat mucosa. These natural ingredients do not “cure” the cause of cough, but they may help relieve irritation, dryness and scratching in the throat.
Honey may soothe irritated mucosa in adults and children older than one year. Marshmallow root and Iceland moss contain mucilage that may form a protective layer on the throat mucosa. Ivy is more often used in productive cough and expectoration products. Bay leaf and onion are traditionally used in home remedies, but stronger symptoms should not delay medical examination.
If the main symptoms are scratching, hoarseness and tickling in the throat with cough, it may be useful to review the category throat products, because lozenges, sprays and throat syrups can often help with local irritation.
When does cough require a doctor?
Cough most often accompanies a cold and gradually improves, but there are situations when syrups and natural measures are not enough. See a doctor if the cough lasts longer than 3 weeks, if there is blood in the sputum, high fever, breathing difficulty, chest pain, severe tiredness, purulent mucus or worsening general condition.
Night cough that keeps returning may indicate allergy, asthma, reflux or postnasal drip, so it is important to find the cause. In small children and babies, the threshold for examination is lower — especially if the child has difficulty breathing, refuses fluids, has a high fever or is unusually sleepy.

Pharmacist’s messageWith cough, the most important step is to distinguish whether it is dry or productive. A syrup that calms dry cough is not the same as a syrup for expectoration, and in children, age and dose must be checked carefully. If cough lasts, returns at night, is accompanied by fever, breathing difficulty, chest pain or blood in sputum, do not delay medical examination.
