Mycofin is an antifungal medicine containing terbinafine. This page covers two pharmaceutical forms:
- Mycofin Rp 250 mg tablets – prescription systemic treatment for selected fungal infections of the skin and nails;
- Mycofin 10 mg/g cream – non-prescription local treatment for interdigital athlete’s foot and fungal infection of the groin.
The tablets and cream are not interchangeable. The appropriate form depends on the site, severity and extent of infection, appearance of the lesions, other medical conditions and concurrent treatment.
A discoloured, thickened or damaged nail does not automatically confirm a fungal infection. Psoriasis, trauma, bacterial infection and other disorders may have a similar appearance.
Mycofin cream does not treat fungal infection inside the nail plate. Oral tablets require medical assessment and may require liver-function tests before and during treatment.
Mycofin – differences between the tablets and cream
| Form | Main use | Pack and supply status |
|---|---|---|
| Mycofin Rp 250 mg tablets | Tinea pedis, tinea corporis, tinea cruris and onychomycosis when oral treatment is appropriate | 14 tablets; prescription only |
| Mycofin 10 mg/g cream | Interdigital athlete’s foot and tinea cruris | 15 g tube; without a prescription |
Mycofin Rp tablets – approved uses
The tablets are used in adults for fungal infections caused by susceptible dermatophytes:
- tinea pedis when oral treatment is appropriate because of the location, severity or extent;
- tinea corporis;
- tinea cruris;
- onychomycosis of the fingernails or toenails.
Visible improvement of an infected nail may continue long after the tablets have been completed because a new healthy nail must grow and replace the damaged part.
Dosage and treatment duration
The usual adult dose is 250 mg once daily.
- Tinea pedis: usually 2–6 weeks.
- Tinea corporis: approximately 4 weeks.
- Tinea cruris: usually 2–4 weeks.
- Onychomycosis: commonly 6 weeks to 3 months; some infections of the great toenail may require 6 months or longer.
Swallow the tablet with water, preferably at approximately the same time every day. It may be taken with or without food.
The tablet can be divided into equal doses, but the prescribed dose must not be changed independently.
Liver-function monitoring
Liver function should be assessed before the tablets are prescribed. During longer treatment, repeat testing is generally recommended after approximately 4–6 weeks.
The tablets must not be used in patients with chronic or active liver disease.
Stop taking the tablets and contact the doctor promptly if persistent nausea, loss of appetite, unusual tiredness, right upper abdominal pain, unexplained itching, yellow skin or eyes, dark urine or pale stools occur.
Contraindications and precautions
- allergy to terbinafine or another ingredient;
- chronic or active liver disease;
- significant kidney impairment without specialist assessment;
- use in children is not recommended because data are limited;
- breastfeeding.
Particular caution is required in patients with psoriasis, systemic lupus erythematosus or previous liver or kidney problems.
Important interactions
Tell the doctor about rifampicin, cimetidine, fluconazole, ketoconazole, amiodarone, selected antidepressants, beta-blockers, MAO-B inhibitors, dextromethorphan, ciclosporin, warfarin and other medicines requiring close monitoring.
Irregular menstrual cycles or breakthrough bleeding have occasionally been reported in patients using oral contraceptives.
Pregnancy, breastfeeding and driving – tablets
Oral terbinafine should be used during pregnancy only when treatment is clearly required and the expected benefit justifies the possible risk.
Terbinafine passes into breast milk, so the tablets must not be used while breastfeeding.
Patients who experience dizziness should not drive or operate machinery.
Possible tablet side effects
Possible effects include reduced appetite, indigestion, nausea, abdominal discomfort, diarrhoea, rash, hives, muscle or joint pain and headache.
Taste disturbance or loss, reduced body weight, dizziness, numbness, tiredness, hair loss, altered smell, tinnitus, visual disturbance and worsening psoriasis have also been reported.
- yellow skin or eyes, dark urine or pale stools;
- a progressive rash, blisters, mouth sores or peeling skin;
- swelling of the face, tongue or throat;
- difficulty breathing or swallowing;
- fever, repeated infections, bruising or unusual bleeding;
- severe upper abdominal pain spreading to the back;
- marked muscle weakness or pain with dark urine;
- an overdose.
Mycofin 10 mg/g cream
The cream is intended for adults and adolescents over 16 years for:
- interdigital athlete’s foot;

Wash the feet regularly and dry carefully between the toes. Change socks daily and keep footwear clean, dry and well ventilated.

Are Mycofin tablets and cream interchangeable?
No. They contain terbinafine but differ in strength, site of action, indications and supply status.
Does Mycofin cream treat nail fungus?
No. It treats selected fungal skin infections and does not adequately reach fungi inside the nail plate.
How often is the cream applied?
Once daily for seven days.
How long are the tablets taken?
Skin infections usually require 2–6 weeks. Nail treatment commonly lasts 6 weeks to 3 months and may sometimes be longer.
Why are liver tests required?
Oral terbinafine may rarely cause serious liver injury, so liver function is assessed before treatment and, when appropriate, after 4–6 weeks.
When should medical advice be obtained?
Seek prompt advice for signs of liver injury, a severe rash or allergic reaction. For the cream, seek advice when no improvement is seen after two weeks.
