Who is the Microlife BP A3 Plus suitable for and what does it offer for everyday blood pressure checks?

The Microlife BP A3 Plus is an automatic upper arm blood pressure monitor for simple and reliable measurements at home. According to the manufacturer's instructions for use it is intended for non-invasive measurement of blood pressure in people aged 12 years or older.

Its central feature is Microlife MAM technology: the device automatically takes three measurements in succession with 15-second breaks and shows only the averaged result. Because blood pressure varies from moment to moment, the average of three readings gives a more representative value than a single measurement.

The BP A3 Plus also has an irregular heartbeat indicator, a traffic light display that classifies the result in colour, and memory for two users with up to 99 readings each. Unlike the Microlife models with AFIB technology, it does not detect atrial fibrillation specifically, which makes it a straightforward choice for users who mainly want to monitor their blood pressure values.

The traffic light indicator follows the classification for home readings given in the instructions: optimum 120–129 / 74–79 mmHg (green), elevated 130–134 / 80–84 mmHg (yellow), too high 135–159 / 85–99 mmHg (orange – seek medical advice) and dangerously high from 160 / 100 mmHg (red – urgently seek medical advice).

How to use

Sit down and rest for 5 minutes before measuring, with your back supported, feet flat on the floor and legs uncrossed. Put the cuff on the bare upper arm about 1–2 cm above the elbow, with the artery mark over the inside of the arm, and support the arm so that the cuff is at heart level.

Press the ON/OFF button to start. Stay still and do not talk until the result is displayed. Write down the result or keep it in the device's memory – the monitor switches off automatically after about one minute.

Who is it for?

The BP A3 Plus is intended for adults and adolescents from 12 years of age who want to check their blood pressure regularly at home – for example people with elevated blood pressure, people on antihypertensive treatment who keep a diary for their doctor, or couples who share one device thanks to the two separate memories.

Important notes

If the irregular heartbeat symbol appears, the measured values may deviate from your actual blood pressure – repeat the measurement. People with a known heart rhythm disorder should consult their doctor before use.
The pulse display is not suitable for checking the frequency of a heart pacemaker.
Do not change your therapy on the basis of home readings alone – discuss them with your doctor.
Clean the device only with a soft, dry cloth and spots on the cuff with a damp cloth and soapy water; never machine-wash the cuff. Remove the batteries if the device will not be used for a longer period.

Pharmacist's advice:

For a realistic picture of your blood pressure, measure on several days in a row at the same times – in the morning before breakfast and medication, and in the evening – always on the same arm. Thanks to the MAM average you do not need to repeat readings yourself; simply write down the displayed value and bring the record to your doctor.

Check the circumference of your upper arm before buying: the monitor comes with a cuff for 22–42 cm, which suits most adults, but slimmer or stronger arms need a different size for accurate results.

1. Does the Microlife BP A3 Plus detect atrial fibrillation?

No. It has an indicator for an irregular heartbeat, but it does not have Microlife AFIB technology for detecting possible atrial fibrillation. If this is important to you, choose a Microlife model with AFIB detection, such as the BP A6 BT or BP A7 Touch.

2. What does the MAM mode mean?

In the MAM mode the device takes three measurements in succession with 15-second breaks (a fourth if one reading is questionable) and displays their average. The individual readings are not shown.

3. Can two people use the device?

Yes. It has memory for two users with up to 99 readings each, so each person can follow their own values separately.

4. How long do the batteries last?

According to the manufacturer, four new 1.5 V AA alkaline batteries are enough for approximately 920 measurements. An optional mains adapter (DC 6 V, 600 mA) can also be used, in which case no battery power is consumed.
