How does the Microlife BP A7 Touch help you measure blood pressure at home and detect possible atrial fibrillation?

The Microlife BP A7 Touch is a fully automatic upper arm blood pressure monitor for home use. It measures systolic and diastolic blood pressure and pulse rate, and according to the manufacturer's instructions for use it is intended for people aged 12 years or older.

Its most important feature is AFIB detection: in the AFIB/MAM mode the device checks the pulse during the measurement and shows a symbol if it finds an irregular pulse that may suggest atrial fibrillation. Atrial fibrillation is a common heart rhythm disorder that often goes unnoticed and is an important risk factor for stroke, which is why many people like to have this check built into their regular home measurements. The monitor does not diagnose atrial fibrillation – a diagnosis always requires an ECG and a doctor.

In the same mode the device uses Microlife MAM technology: it automatically takes three measurements in a row and shows one averaged result, which reduces the influence of a single, random reading. Two users can each store up to 99 readings, and a guest mode allows measurements that are not saved.

Key benefits:

  • AFIB detection of an irregular pulse that may suggest atrial fibrillation (does not replace an ECG).
  • MAM mode – three automatic measurements with one averaged result.
  • Memory for 2 users with up to 99 readings each, plus a guest mode.
  • Traffic light indicator that classifies the result at a glance.
  • Cuff check and arm movement indicators that warn about incorrect measurements.
  • Lock switch against accidental switching on.

Expected service lifeDevice 5 years or 10,000 measurements

The traffic light indicator uses the classification for home measurements given in the instructions: optimum 120–129 / 74–79 mmHg (green), elevated 130–134 / 80–84 mmHg (yellow), too high 135–159 / 85–99 mmHg (orange) and dangerously high from 160 / 100 mmHg (red). The higher of the two values determines the evaluation.

How to use

Before measuring, avoid physical activity, eating and smoking. Sit on a chair with a backrest, relax for 5 minutes, keep your feet flat on the floor and do not cross your legs. Always measure on the same arm (normally the left one, or the arm with higher values if a doctor has determined this).

Remove tight clothing from the upper arm and put the cuff on snugly about 2 cm above the elbow, with the artery mark over the artery on the inside of the arm. Rest the arm so that the cuff is at heart level. Slide the lock switch to unlock and press START/STOP. During the measurement keep still, do not tense your arm muscles, breathe normally and do not talk. After the measurement remove the cuff – the device switches off automatically after about one minute.

Who is it for?

The monitor is intended for adults and adolescents aged 12 or older who regularly check their blood pressure at home – for example people with high blood pressure who keep a blood pressure diary for their doctor. The AFIB function is especially useful for older people and for those who want to check their heart rhythm during routine measurements. According to Microlife, AFIB screening is not recommended for young people or during pregnancy, because it may give false results and cause unnecessary worry.

Important notes

  • The device does not diagnose atrial fibrillation – only an ECG interpreted by a doctor can confirm it. If the AFIB symbol appears after a full triple measurement, repeat the measurement; if it appears again, seek medical advice.
  • In people with a pacemaker or defibrillator the device may detect atrial fibrillation incorrectly or not at all; with atrial fibrillation the diastolic value may be inaccurate.
  • Never change your therapy on the basis of home measurements alone – discuss the results with your doctor.
  • Clean the device only with a soft, dry cloth and remove spots on the cuff with a damp cloth and soapy water; do not put the cuff in a washing machine. Keep the device dry and away from extreme temperatures and direct sunlight.
  • Microlife recommends an accuracy test every 2 years or after a mechanical impact.

Pharmacist's advice:

Choose the cuff size by measuring the circumference of your upper arm midway between the shoulder and the elbow – a cuff that is too small gives falsely high values, and one that is too large gives falsely low values. Measure at the same times every day, for example in the morning before taking medication and in the evening, and write down the results or bring the device's memory to your check-up.

If the AFIB symbol appears repeatedly, do not panic, but do not ignore it either: note the date and time and arrange an ECG with your doctor. Seek urgent help if a high reading is accompanied by chest pain, shortness of breath, sudden weakness of one side of the body or speech problems.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

1. Does the Microlife BP A7 Touch diagnose atrial fibrillation?

No. It detects an irregular pulse that may suggest atrial fibrillation and shows the AFIB symbol. The diagnosis can only be made by a doctor on the basis of an ECG, so a repeated AFIB symbol is a reason to see your doctor.

2. Why does the device take three measurements in the MAM mode?

Blood pressure changes from heartbeat to heartbeat. In the MAM mode the device takes three measurements with 15-second breaks and shows their average, which is more reliable than a single reading. AFIB detection works only in this mode.

3. Can two people use the same monitor?

Yes. The memory has two separate users with up to 99 readings each, and the guest mode allows occasional measurements by other people without saving them to either user's memory.

4. What if the cuff does not fit my arm?

Microlife offers cuffs from 17 to 52 cm arm circumference (S, M, M–L, L and L–XL). If the supplied cuff does not fit, ask the pharmacy for the right size before measuring.
