Linex is a probiotic medicine in hard capsules containing at least 1.2 × 10^7 CFU of live lyophilised lactic acid bacteria: Lactobacillus acidophilus (L. gasseri), Bifidobacterium infantis and Enterococcus faecium. It belongs to antidiarrhoeal microorganisms (ATC A07FA01).
The bacteria help establish and maintain a balanced gut flora and are resistant to certain antibiotics and chemotherapeutics. Thanks to lyophilisation, the medicine can be stored at room temperature. It is intended for adults, children and infants; the pack contains 16 capsules.

What is Linex used for?
According to the patient leaflet, Linex is used as preventive and supportive therapy for diarrhoea, bloating and other digestive disorders caused by an imbalance of the gut flora. The imbalance may result from:
- viral and bacterial infections of the digestive tract in infants, children and adults (e.g. rotavirus infection, travellers' diarrhoea)
- treatment with broad-spectrum antibiotics and chemotherapeutics
- radiotherapy of the abdominal and pelvic organs
How is it used and dosed?
The medicine is taken orally, during a meal, so that the bacteria are protected from stomach acid. Do not take it with alcohol or hot drinks.
- Adults and children aged 12 and over: 2 capsules 3 times a day (e.g. morning, noon and evening).
- Children aged 2 to 12: 1–2 capsules 3 times a day.
- Infants up to 2 years: 1 capsule 3 times a day.
- Children under 6 and people who cannot swallow a capsule: open the capsule, empty the contents onto a spoon and mix with a little water.
- With antibiotics or chemotherapeutics: if possible not at the same time – taking Linex at least 3 hours after the antibiotic is recommended.
- Take until symptoms improve; if diarrhoea does not improve within 2 days, see a doctor.
Special patient groups
- Infants and children under 6: diarrhoea must not be treated without medical supervision; open the capsule and mix the contents with a little water.
- People with chronic diseases (e.g. diabetes, cardiovascular disease) or weakened immunity (e.g. HIV infection) who have diarrhoea: ask a doctor before use.
- Elderly people and people with kidney or liver impairment: the leaflet does not specify a dose adjustment.
Contraindications – when the medicine must not be used
The medicine must not be taken in case of hypersensitivity (allergy) to the active substances or any of the excipients.
Precautions and warnings
Ask a doctor before taking the medicine if:
- you have a body temperature above 38 °C
- you notice traces of blood or mucus in the stool
- diarrhoea lasts longer than two days
- you have severe diarrhoea with dehydration and weight loss
- diarrhoea is accompanied by severe abdominal pain
- you have diarrhoea and a chronic disease or weakened immunity
The medicine contains lactose (98.28 mg per capsule) – if you have an intolerance to some sugars, consult a doctor. It may contain traces of milk protein that can cause allergic reactions. It contains less than 1 mmol sodium per dose.
Interactions with other medicines, alcohol and food
No clinically significant interactions with other medicines have been established. The bacteria in the medicine are naturally resistant to certain antibiotics and chemotherapeutics, so Linex can be taken with them, but preferably not at the same time – ideally at least 3 hours after the antibiotic. Do not take with alcohol or hot drinks; take during a meal.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
No adverse reactions associated with use during pregnancy and breastfeeding have been reported, but there are insufficient data to confirm safety. Diarrhoea during pregnancy and breastfeeding should be treated under medical supervision, with measures to prevent loss of fluids and electrolytes. There are no data on effects on fertility.
Driving and using machines
No studies on the effect of the medicine on the ability to drive and use machines have been performed.
Possible side effects
- Very rare (up to 1 in 10,000 patients): hypersensitivity reactions.
If any side effect becomes serious or you notice a side effect not listed in the leaflet, tell your doctor or pharmacist.
Suspected side effects can be reported to your doctor, pharmacist or the Medicines and Medical Devices Agency of Serbia (ALIMS).
Overdose, missed dose and stopping treatment
- Overdose: no cases of overdose have been reported; if side effects occur, contact a doctor or pharmacist.
- Missed dose: do not take a double dose; take the medicine at the time of the next dose and continue as scheduled.
- Stopping treatment: the medicine is taken until symptoms improve.
When to seek medical help immediately?
- signs of dehydration: intense thirst, dry mouth, passing little urine, weakness, and in babies dry nappies and sunken eyes or fontanelle
- blood or mucus in the stool, fever above 38 °C or severe abdominal pain
- diarrhoea in an infant or child under 6 years
- diarrhoea lasting longer than 2 days despite treatment
- swelling of the face, rash or difficulty breathing after taking the medicine
Pharmacist's advice
When taking an antibiotic, take Linex at least 3 hours apart and always with a meal, with a cold or lukewarm drink – never with a hot drink or alcohol. For small children, open the capsule and mix the contents with a little water on a teaspoon.
In diarrhoea, the most important thing is to replace fluids and electrolytes, especially in children and older people. In infants and children under 6, diarrhoea should always be assessed by a doctor.
