What sets the Microlife BP A200 AFIB apart from an ordinary home blood pressure monitor?

The Microlife BP A200 AFIB is a digital, fully automatic upper arm blood pressure monitor for non-invasive measurement of blood pressure and pulse in people aged 12 and over. What distinguishes it from an ordinary monitor is the AFIB function: during measurement the device can detect an irregular pulse suggestive of atrial fibrillation (AF), one of the most common heart rhythm disorders.

AF detection is active in AFIB/MAM mode. In this mode the monitor automatically takes three measurements with a 15-second break between them and shows only the averaged result; if one of the three readings is questionable, it adds a fourth. If signs of atrial fibrillation are detected, the AFIB symbol appears – the result then needs to be checked by a doctor with an ECG.

A traffic-light indicator on the display shows whether the result is in the optimal, elevated, high or dangerously high range, and the cuff check helps detect a loose or incorrectly connected cuff. The monitor stores the last 200 measurements and runs on four AA batteries or an optional mains adapter.

Key benefits:

  • Detects an irregular pulse suggestive of atrial fibrillation (in AFIB/MAM mode).
  • MAM mode: three automatic measurements, averaged result shown.
  • Traffic-light indicator for quick interpretation of the result.
  • Cuff check warns of a loose or incorrectly connected cuff.
  • Memory for the last 200 measurements.
  • 5-year warranty on the device according to the instruction manual.

How to use

Rest seated for about 5 minutes before measuring, with your back supported and feet flat on the floor.

  • Fit a cuff of the correct size 1–2 cm above the elbow, at heart level, with the artery mark over the inner arm.
  • For atrial fibrillation screening, switch on AFIB/MAM mode.
  • Press ON/OFF; the cuff inflates automatically. Stay still and do not talk until the result appears.
  • Read the result and the traffic-light indicator, then remove the cuff and switch the device off.
  • If the AFIB symbol appears, discuss the result with your doctor.

Who is it for?

The BP A200 AFIB is intended for people aged 12 and over who measure their blood pressure at home, for example with diagnosed high blood pressure or on medical advice, and who want the monitor to also check the pulse for signs of atrial fibrillation. Because Microlife offers cuffs from 17 to 52 cm, the device can be used with very thin as well as very strong arms, provided the right cuff is chosen.

Important notes

  • The device is not a diagnostic tool – a suspected atrial fibrillation must be confirmed by an ECG.
  • In people with a pacemaker or defibrillator, AF may not be detected or may be detected wrongly.
  • If atrial fibrillation is present, the diastolic value may be inaccurate – MAM mode is recommended.
  • AF screening is not recommended for young people or during pregnancy; in pregnancy the AFIB symbol can be ignored.
  • Use only Microlife cuffs and have the accuracy checked every 2 years or after a fall or impact.

Pharmacist's advice:

Choose the cuff by measuring the circumference of your upper arm midway between the shoulder and elbow – a cuff that is too small gives falsely high values, and one that is too large gives falsely low values. Check that the cuff in the box matches your arm before the first measurement; other Microlife sizes are available for this device.

For a reliable picture, measure in AFIB/MAM mode twice a day for about a week before a check-up and show the stored values to your doctor. A single AFIB signal is not a diagnosis, but repeated signals are a clear reason for an ECG.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

1. How does the A200 AFIB detect atrial fibrillation?

In AFIB/MAM mode it analyses the pulse during three consecutive measurements. If the pulse is irregular in a way that suggests atrial fibrillation, the AFIB symbol appears on the display. The finding must be confirmed by an ECG.

2. How many results does the monitor store?

According to the instruction manual, the device stores the last 200 measurements; when the memory is full, the oldest value is overwritten.

3. Can I use rechargeable batteries?

Yes, NiMH rechargeable batteries can be used, but they must be removed and charged outside the device. Alternatively, an optional Microlife mains adapter (DC 6 V, 600 mA) can be used.

4. Is the AFIB function reliable if I have a pacemaker?

No. The manufacturer states that in people with pacemakers or defibrillators, atrial fibrillation may not be detected or may be detected wrongly. Blood pressure can still be measured, but the AFIB indicator should not be relied on.
