Midol 100 mg contains 100 mg of acetylsalicylic acid in a gastro-resistant tablet. At low doses acetylsalicylic acid acts as an antiplatelet medicine – it reduces the clumping of blood platelets and so helps prevent blood clots forming in the arteries.

According to the approved leaflet, Midol is used for secondary prevention – preventing a further heart attack or stroke in people who have already had one – and after heart bypass surgery. A doctor must be consulted before first use.

Important warning

  • Dispensing status in Serbia: available without a prescription, but a doctor must be consulted before first use.
  • The medicine is not intended to relieve pain or to reduce fever in colds and flu.
  • It increases the tendency to bleed – tell your doctor or dentist before surgery or a tooth extraction; do not combine with alcohol.
  • Must not be taken in the last three months of pregnancy or by people under 16 years (unless a doctor decides otherwise).
  • This page is for information only and is not an offer to buy the medicine online.

What is Midol 100 mg used for?

Midol is used for secondary prevention of cerebrovascular and cardiovascular thrombotic diseases and after bypass surgery:

  • to prevent blood clots after a heart attack or stroke and to prevent a further heart attack or stroke in people who have already had one
  • after bypass surgery (bridging of the heart blood vessels)

The medicine is not intended to relieve pain or to lower a fever in colds and flu.

How is it used and dosed?

  • Adults, older people and children over 16: the usual dose for long-term use is 75–150 mg once a day; in some cases, on medical advice and for a short time, up to 300 mg a day.
  • For an antithrombotic effect, 150 mg is usually given at the time of diagnosis (these tablets are chewed for faster absorption), followed by 75 mg – as decided by a doctor.
  • Take the tablets preferably before a meal, with plenty of liquid.
  • Do not take any indigestion remedy immediately before or after Midol.
  • Consult a doctor before starting long-term use; regular check-ups are needed.
  • Do not take more than the recommended dose.

Special patient groups

  • Children and adolescents under 16: must not be used unless advised by a doctor (e.g. for Kawasaki disease), because of the risk of Reye's syndrome.
  • Older people: caution is needed, as they are more prone to side effects.
  • Severe kidney or liver impairment: must not be taken; in milder impairment caution is needed.

Contraindications – when the medicine must not be used

  • allergy to acetylsalicylic acid, other salicylates or the excipients
  • a previous asthma attack after salicylates or other NSAIDs
  • stomach or duodenal ulcer
  • increased bleeding tendency
  • severe kidney or liver impairment; severe heart failure
  • the last three months of pregnancy
  • methotrexate at a dose of 15 mg per week or more
  • age under 16, unless a doctor decides otherwise

Precautions and warnings

  • Talk to your doctor if you are allergic to other painkillers or antirheumatics, have had a stomach/intestinal ulcer or bleeding, use other blood thinners, have kidney or circulation problems, impaired liver function, severe G6PD deficiency, asthma, hay fever or nasal polyps, heavy periods or gout.
  • If there are signs of bleeding or an ulcer (blood in the stool, black stools, bleeding from the mouth), stop the medicine and contact your doctor immediately.
  • Before surgery, including tooth extraction, tell your doctor or dentist that you take Midol.
  • Minor cuts may bleed for longer; report unusual bruising or bleeding to your doctor.
  • At any sign of hypersensitivity (rash, itching, swelling, difficulty breathing) the medicine should be stopped.

Interactions with other medicines, alcohol and food

  • methotrexate – increased toxicity
  • other NSAIDs, systemic corticosteroids, SSRI antidepressants (citalopram, escitalopram, fluoxetine, fluvoxamine, paroxetine, sertraline) – increased risk of ulcers and bleeding
  • anticoagulants, thrombolytics and other antiplatelet medicines – increased risk of bleeding
  • ibuprofen, naproxen and metamizole – may reduce the protective antiplatelet effect of Midol
  • digoxin, valproic acid, antidiabetics (insulin, sulfonylureas) – increased effect or toxicity
  • diuretics and ACE inhibitors – reduced effect and kidney filtration; probenecid, benzbromarone – reduced uric acid excretion
  • alcohol – avoid: it increases the risk of bleeding in the digestive tract

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Women who are planning a pregnancy or are pregnant should avoid this medicine. Midol must not be taken in the last 3 months of pregnancy – it may harm the unborn baby and cause problems during delivery. In the first 6 months it is taken only if necessary, on medical advice, at the lowest dose and for the shortest time; use for more than a few days from week 20 may cause kidney problems in the baby (oligohydramnios) or narrowing of the ductus arteriosus.

Midol passes into breast milk in small amounts – a doctor decides about use during breastfeeding; with regular use or high doses breastfeeding should be stopped. The medicine may temporarily affect fertility in women.

Driving and using machines

Midol has no influence on the ability to drive and use machines.

Possible side effects

  • common (up to 1 in 10): dizziness, ringing in the ears, nosebleed, runny nose, indigestion, abdominal pain, inflammation and bleeding in the digestive tract, rash, itching, bleeding from the urinary and genital organs
  • uncommon (up to 1 in 100): iron-deficiency anaemia, hypersensitivity reactions and angioedema, bleeding in the brain, bruising, blocked nose, bleeding gums, ulcers in the digestive tract, impaired liver function, hives
  • rare (up to 1 in 1,000): haemorrhagic anaemia, anaphylactic reaction, bleeding into a muscle, perforation of an ulcer, raised liver enzymes, acute kidney injury
  • not known: haemolytic anaemia, anaphylactic shock, bleeding during surgery, worsening of respiratory disease, narrowing of the bowel

Suspected side effects can be reported to your doctor, pharmacist or the Medicines and Medical Devices Agency of Serbia (ALIMS).

Overdose, missed dose and stopping treatment

  • Overdose: contact a doctor or emergency service without delay. Moderate overdose may cause fainting, dizziness, ringing in the ears, deafness, sweating, nausea, vomiting, headache and light-headedness; severe overdose may cause rapid breathing, fever, dehydration, restlessness, seizures, hallucinations, low blood sugar, coma and shock.
  • Missed dose: wait and take the next dose at the usual time; do not take a double dose.
  • Stopping treatment: do not stop taking Midol without first consulting your doctor.

When to seek medical help immediately?

  • black or bloody stools, vomiting blood, severe abdominal pain (possible digestive tract bleeding)
  • sudden severe headache, disturbed vision or speech, or weakness in the arms/legs
  • swelling of the face, lips or throat, difficulty breathing, an asthma attack
  • unusual bleeding or bruising that does not settle
  • suspicion that more than the recommended dose has been taken

Pharmacist's advice

Midol 100 mg is not a headache tablet – it is a medicine that protects the heart and blood vessels, taken daily and long-term as decided by a doctor. Swallow the tablet whole, preferably before a meal, with a glass of water; the protective coating ensures the medicine is released only in the intestine.

If you occasionally need a painkiller, ask your pharmacist which one is suitable: ibuprofen and metamizole may weaken the protective effect of Midol, and combining it with other NSAIDs increases the risk of stomach bleeding. Before any dental procedure, tell your dentist that you take Midol.

Frequently asked questions

Is Midol 100 mg a painkiller?

No. According to the leaflet, Midol 100 mg is not intended to relieve pain or to lower a fever in colds and flu. It is used to prevent a further heart attack or stroke and after bypass surgery.

Should Midol be taken before or after food?

The gastro-resistant tablets should preferably be taken before a meal with plenty of liquid. Indigestion remedies should not be taken immediately before or after Midol.

Can I stop Midol before a tooth extraction?

Not on your own. Tell your dentist and doctor that you take Midol – they decide whether a temporary break is needed. The medicine is not stopped without consulting a doctor.

Can Midol be combined with ibuprofen?

Only on medical advice. Ibuprofen and naproxen may reduce the protective effect of Midol on platelets, and taking them together increases the risk of stomach bleeding.
