Lactobacilli are rod-shaped bacteria of the genus Lactobacillus that ferment lactic acid from carbohydrates. Lactobacillus acidophilus bacteria are present in the human intestines immediately after birth, and about two weeks later they are joined by Lactobacillus bifidus bacteria. Both of these species belong to beneficial intestinal bacteria, and their main role in the body is to maintain the proper functioning of the intestines, thereby indirectly influencing the health of the entire organism.
Acidophilus and bifidobacteria can be obtained in the form of food supplements, and at least one of them should be added to the body, especially in people with gastrointestinal disorders and after taking antibiotics. When treated with antibiotics, beneficial bacteria are also destroyed, i.e. disruption of the balance of microorganisms in the intestines. They also suppress the fungus Candida albicans, whose growth is promoted by antibiotics, and which causes fungal infections on the skin, mouth, digestive organs, genitals, and lungs.

It is advisable to combine acidophilus supplements with prebiotics - dietary fibers, pectins and fructo-oligosaccharides - and in general preparations for preserving the health of the digestive tract.
