The skin covers the entire body and is one of the largest organ systems of the human body. The total skin surface of an adult is between 1.5 and 2 square meters. The thickness of the skin is variable and ranges from 0.5 to 4 millimeters. It is thinnest on the eyelids and thickest on the palms and heels.

The skin has three layers: epidermis, dermis and hypodermis. The most numerous cells of the epidermis are keratinocytes, and besides them there are also melanocytes (pigment cells), Langerhans cells and Merkel cells. The dermis consists of a papillary part and a reticular part, which differ in the density of cells and connective tissue. The hypodermis is mainly adipose tissue.
