How does the Microlife BP 3AG1 measure blood pressure at home and what does it show on the display?
The Microlife BP 3AG1 is an automatic upper arm blood pressure monitor for self-measurement at home. It uses the oscillometric method: the cuff inflates automatically, and the display then shows systolic and diastolic pressure and pulse rate.
If an irregular heartbeat is detected during measurement, the device shows the IHB symbol. In that case the reading may differ from your actual blood pressure, so the manufacturer recommends repeating the measurement. Readings are stored in the device memory so you can review them later.
The monitor runs on four AA batteries and also has a socket for an optional Microlife mains adapter, which is practical if you measure every day. According to the manual, it is intended for people aged 12 and over.
Key benefits:
- Automatic measurement on the upper arm – blood pressure and pulse.
- IHB symbol when an irregular heartbeat is detected during measurement.
- Memory for reviewing earlier readings.
- Battery-powered (4 x AA), with a socket for an optional mains adapter.
- Automatic switch-off after about one minute.

How to use
Avoid physical activity, eating or smoking just before measuring. Sit in a chair with back support, rest for at least 5 minutes, keep your feet flat on the floor and do not cross your legs.
Always measure on the same arm. Place the cuff 1–2 cm above the elbow, with the artery mark over the artery on the inside of the arm, and keep the cuff at heart level. Stay still, do not talk and breathe normally during measurement. Take at least two readings, more than 5 minutes apart, and note the average.
Who is it for?
The monitor is intended for adults and adolescents from 12 years of age who need to check their blood pressure regularly at home – for example people with high or low blood pressure or those whose doctor has asked them to keep a blood pressure diary. Choose the cuff according to your upper arm circumference.
Important notes
- Readings are not a diagnosis. Do not change your medication or treatment on the basis of the readings – discuss them with your doctor.
- If you have a significant heart rhythm disorder, ask your doctor whether the device is suitable for you. The pulse display is not suitable for checking the rate of a pacemaker.
- Do not measure on the arm on the side of a mastectomy or lymph node clearance, or on an injured arm. Do not use in a moving vehicle.
- The manufacturer recommends an accuracy check every 2 years or after a mechanical impact (for example if the device is dropped).
Pharmacist's advice:
Before buying, measure your upper arm circumference midway between the shoulder and the elbow – a cuff that is too small or too large is the most common cause of inaccurate readings. Measure at the same times every day, for example in the morning before taking medication and in the evening, and take your readings or the device to your doctor's appointment. If the IHB symbol appears often, tell your doctor.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
1. Which cuff size do I need?
This depends on your upper arm circumference. Microlife cuffs are available in sizes S (17–22 cm), M (22–32 cm), M–L (22–42 cm) and L (32–42 cm); use only Microlife cuffs.
2. What does the IHB symbol mean?
The device detected an irregular heartbeat during measurement. The reading may then differ from your actual blood pressure, so repeat the measurement and tell your doctor if the symbol appears often.
3. Can the monitor work on mains power?
Yes, with the optional Microlife mains adapter (DC 6 V, 600 mA). Otherwise it runs on four AA batteries, which last for about 920 measurements.
4. How often should the device be checked?
The manufacturer recommends an accuracy check every 2 years or after a mechanical impact, such as a fall.
