Tyrosur Gel 1 mg/g is a topical antibiotic for application to the skin. Each gram of gel contains 1 mg of tyrothricin. It is intended for the treatment of small, superficial and moderately moist wounds with an additional bacterial infection caused by microorganisms sensitive to tyrothricin.

The medicine may be used for suitable minor lacerations, scratches and abrasions. Tyrosur Gel is not intended for every red, painful or moist skin lesion, because these symptoms alone do not confirm a bacterial infection.

Important warning
Tyrosur Gel is intended only for external application to the skin. Do not apply it to the nasal mucosa and do not allow it to come into contact with the eyes. Deep, large, puncture, heavily contaminated or severely bleeding wounds, animal bites and wounds with marked signs of infection require professional medical assessment.

Tyrosur Gel – application, dosage and important precautions

What is Tyrosur Gel used for?

Tyrosur Gel is used for small, superficial and moderately moist wounds with a bacterial superinfection caused by microorganisms sensitive to tyrothricin, including:

  • minor lacerations;
  • scratches;
  • abrasions and grazes.

The medicine should not be applied preventively to every injury or used repeatedly for long periods without advice from a doctor or pharmacist. A topical antibiotic should be used only when the type and appearance of the wound match the approved indication.

How is Tyrosur Gel applied?

Users Frequency Method of application
Adults and children aged 1 year and over 2–3 times daily Apply enough gel to cover the injured skin completely
Children under 1 year Not included in the approved instructions Seek advice from a paediatrician

Wash your hands before application and clean the wound as advised by a doctor or pharmacist. Apply a thin layer that completely covers the affected area. The medicine is intended exclusively for external use on the skin.

A dressing is generally not required for small wounds or inflamed areas on exposed parts of the body. A suitable protective dressing may be used for a more moist wound or when additional protection is required. The dressing should be changed after one to two days or as directed by a doctor.

The duration of treatment depends on the appearance and clinical course of the wound. Consult a doctor if there is no improvement after 7 days, if the condition worsens or if the infection appears to be spreading.

When must Tyrosur Gel not be used?

  • if you are allergic to tyrothricin or any other ingredient;
  • on the nasal mucosa;
  • in or very close to the eyes without appropriate caution;
  • in children under one year without an explicit medical decision;
  • on wounds outside the approved indication.

Intranasal application is prohibited because it may damage the sense of smell. Accidental contact with the eyes may cause burning. Rinse the eye carefully with water and seek professional advice if symptoms persist.

When is medical assessment required?

Do not rely solely on a topical gel if you notice:

  • redness or swelling spreading around the wound;
  • increasing or throbbing pain;
  • yellow, green or unpleasant-smelling discharge;
  • fever or chills;
  • red streaks spreading from the wound;
  • heavy or persistent bleeding;
  • a deep, puncture or heavily contaminated wound;
  • an animal or human bite;
  • a wound in a person with diabetes, poor circulation or reduced immunity;
  • no improvement after seven days.
Seek urgent medical help if you experience:
  • difficulty breathing or swallowing;
  • swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat;
  • a severe allergic reaction following application;
  • rapidly spreading redness and swelling;
  • high fever, marked weakness or other general signs of infection;
  • a deep wound, severe bleeding or a foreign object embedded in the wound.

Other medicines and Tyrosur Gel

It is not known that other medicines affect Tyrosur Gel, and Tyrosur Gel is not known to affect the action of other medicines.

However, do not apply another medicine, antiseptic, cream, ointment or cosmetic product to the same area at the same time without advice from a doctor or pharmacist. Combining several topical products may cause irritation or alter their effects.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

There are insufficient data regarding the safety of Tyrosur Gel during pregnancy. Because the potential risk is unknown, use during pregnancy is not recommended.

It is not known whether tyrothricin or cetylpyridinium chloride passes into breast milk. Use during breastfeeding is therefore not recommended. Pregnant or breastfeeding patients should consult a doctor or pharmacist before application.

Possible side effects

Hypersensitivity reactions, including a burning sensation on the skin, may occur very rarely.

Stop using the medicine and contact a doctor or pharmacist if marked burning, rash, itching, swelling or other signs of hypersensitivity develop.

Tyrosur Gel contains propylene glycol, which may cause skin irritation in sensitive individuals.

Pharmacist's advice
Before applying a topical antibiotic, confirm that the wound matches its approved indication. Redness or stinging alone does not automatically prove the presence of a bacterial infection.

For a minor superficial wound, wash your hands, gently clean the affected area and apply a thin layer of gel. Avoid touching the wound with the tip of the tube to reduce contamination of the packaging.

If the wound becomes more painful, redness spreads, pus or an unpleasant smell develops, or fever occurs, topical treatment alone is not sufficient and medical assessment is required.
