Octenisept 1 mg/g + 20 mg/g cutaneous solution is a topical antiseptic containing octenidine dihydrochloride and phenoxyethanol. The active substances inhibit the growth of and destroy selected microorganisms on the skin and mucous membranes.
It is used for repeated, short-term antiseptic treatment of mucous membranes and surrounding skin before selected diagnostic or surgical procedures, as supportive antiseptic treatment of wounds and as temporary supportive treatment of fungal infection between the toes.
Octenisept is for local external use only. It must not be injected or introduced into tissue under pressure and must not be used to irrigate deep wound pockets with a syringe. Incorrect pressurised application may cause persistent swelling, redness and tissue necrosis.

What is Octenisept used for?
- short-term antiseptic treatment of mucous membranes and surrounding skin in the anogenital region, including the vagina, vulva and glans penis;
- antiseptic preparation before urinary-bladder catheterisation;
- short-term antiseptic treatment of the oral cavity;
- supportive antiseptic treatment of wounds;
- temporary supportive treatment of fungal infection between the toes.
Octenisept is not intended for routine daily intimate hygiene, prolonged irrigation of mucous membranes or independent treatment of a deep or seriously infected wound.
How is it applied?
The solution is normally applied once daily to mucous membranes and surrounding skin. Application with a fully soaked sterile swab is preferred, while the spray pump may be used on areas that are difficult to reach.
- Wash and dry your hands.
- Remove visible contamination carefully as instructed by a healthcare professional.
- Moisten the entire treatment surface without vigorous rubbing.
- Spray evenly onto areas that cannot easily be reached with a swab.
- Allow a contact time of at least one to two minutes.
- Only then apply a dressing or continue with another procedure.
Do not use more solution than is required to wet the surface. Remove excess solution before applying an occlusive dressing.
Use on wounds
Octenisept is used as supportive antiseptic treatment of wounds. It may be part of the care of minor superficial injuries, but cleaning, dressing selection and dressing-change frequency depend on the type of wound.
Do not inject the solution, introduce it through a cannula or force it into a deep wound cavity. Free drainage of the solution must always be possible.
- a deep, puncture, bite or heavily contaminated wound;
- heavy or prolonged bleeding;
- spreading redness, swelling or pain;
- pus, offensive odour or fever;
- an extensive burn;
- a wound in a patient with diabetes, poor circulation or impaired immunity;
- a wound that does not show expected signs of healing.
Fungal infection between the toes
For supportive treatment of interdigital fungal infection, spray the affected areas in the morning and evening.
Dry carefully between the toes, change socks every day and allow footwear to dry fully. Octenisept is supportive treatment in this indication and does not necessarily replace an appropriate antifungal medicine.
Use in the oral cavity
Oral rinsing is limited to cases where the entire oral cavity must be treated. The approved instructions specify 20 ml of solution for 20 seconds.
Do not swallow the solution. It may cause a temporary bitter taste. Prolonged daily mouth rinsing without professional advice is not recommended.
Where must Octenisept not be used?
- it must not be injected or introduced into the bloodstream;
- it must not be forced into tissue under pressure;
- it must not be used to rinse the abdominal cavity;
- it must not be used to rinse the urinary bladder;
- it must not be used to rinse the ears or on the eardrum;
- contact with the eyes must be avoided;
- swallowing is not recommended.
Rinse the eyes immediately with plenty of water after accidental contact and seek medical advice if irritation continues.
Use in children
The leaflet does not state a specific minimum age, but particular caution is required in premature infants with low birth weight.
Excessive amounts or prolonged contact with soaked materials may cause serious skin damage. Remove excess solution and do not leave soaked clothing, cloths or pads in prolonged direct contact with the skin.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Pregnancy data are limited, although currently available information does not indicate an increased risk to the unborn child. Use may be considered when necessary after advice from a doctor or pharmacist.
Breastfeeding data are also limited. Octenidine is absorbed only minimally or not at all, and accumulation of phenoxyethanol in breast milk is considered unlikely. Seek professional advice before extensive use or application close to the breast.
Interaction with PVP-iodine
Do not apply Octenisept next to antiseptics containing povidone-iodine or PVP-iodine. Dark-brown to purple discolouration may occur where the two solutions meet.
Do not independently apply several antiseptics to the same area. The combination may increase irritation without improving wound care.
Possible side effects
Rare effects include burning, redness, itching and warmth at the application site.
A local allergic reaction, such as temporary redness, is very rare. Oral rinsing may cause a temporary bitter taste.
Persistent swelling, redness and tissue necrosis have been reported after incorrect irrigation of deep wounds with a syringe.
- marked or rapidly increasing swelling;
- severe pain or sudden worsening of a wound;
- difficulty breathing;
- swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat;
- widespread hives or another severe allergic reaction.
How long may it be used?
Octenisept should not be used continuously for longer than 14 days without medical supervision.
Consult a doctor if the condition does not improve, becomes worse or repeatedly returns.
For a superficial wound, first control bleeding with gentle pressure using clean gauze and carefully remove visible dirt. Apply Octenisept until the surface is evenly moist and allow at least one to two minutes before covering it. Do not touch the wound with the spray nozzle. Deep, bite, puncture or heavily contaminated wounds require medical assessment and a review of tetanus protection. Skin-repair products are selected according to the healing stage and do not replace examination when signs of infection are present.

After first opening, the bottle may be used for up to three years, but not beyond the expiry date printed on the packaging.

Is Octenisept an antibiotic?
No. It is a topical antiseptic and disinfectant, not a systemic antibiotic.
