Superficial wounds

Superficial wounds are mild skin injuries that most commonly affect the upper layers of the skin. They may occur due to scratches, abrasions, minor cuts, friction, falls, contact with rough surfaces or everyday household injuries. Although they are usually not serious, proper care is important in order to protect the skin, reduce additional irritation and support the natural recovery process.

In the Superficial Wounds category at ApotekaOnline, you can find selected products for the care of superficial wounds, scratches, abrasions and damaged skin, as well as products for wound protection and skin repair after injury. Special focus is placed on wound gels, plasters, dressings and premium dermocosmetic lines such as Avène Cicalfate, La Roche-Posay Cicaplast and Uriage Bariéderm.

What are superficial wounds?

Superficial wounds usually include scratches, abrasions, minor cuts, shallow skin damage and irritation caused by friction. With these injuries, the skin may be red, sensitive, mildly painful, irritated or prone to tightness during recovery.

It is important to distinguish a minor superficial wound from a deeper or complicated wound. If the wound is deep, bleeds heavily, becomes moist, produces pus, has an unpleasant smell, redness spreads or strong pain is present, medical advice should be sought.

Most common causes of superficial wounds

  • Falls and scratches, especially in children and active people.
  • Minor cuts that occur at home, at work or while cooking.
  • Friction abrasions, especially on knees, elbows, hands and feet.
  • Superficial skin damage after sports activities or outdoor activities.
  • Irritation after shaving, depilation or contact with rough clothing.
  • Weakened skin barrier, when the skin reacts more easily to external factors.

First care for a superficial wound

With a superficial wound, the most important first step is to gently clean the area and remove visible dirt without harsh rubbing. If there is mild bleeding, it can be stopped with light pressure using clean gauze. After that, the wound may be protected with a plaster or suitable dressing in order to reduce contact with dirt, friction and external irritants.

Wound and Burn Gel may be used as local care for superficial wounds, scratches and abrasions, while Pic Solution Protective Mix plasters are a practical solution for protecting minor everyday injuries.

Dressings and additional wound protection

For wounds that require better protection, especially if they are located in an area that moves frequently or is often touched, dressings may be useful because they protect the skin surface and help keep the area covered. The choice of dressing depends on the appearance of the wound, the amount of discharge and the location of the injury.

Medihoney Apinate dressing may be an option for wounds that need a more advanced dressing and additional protection, while Srebrna Rosa Spray may be used for skin care in cases of minor superficial damage and irritation.

Skin repair after a superficial wound

Once the superficial wound has closed and the skin begins to repair, it is important to support the skin barrier and reduce the feeling of tightness, dryness and discomfort. At this stage, repairing products from cica lines can be useful, as they are intended for sensitive, irritated and damaged skin.

Avène Cicalfate+ Cream, La Roche-Posay Cicaplast Baume B5+ and Uriage Bariéderm Cica Cream may be good choices for skin care after the wound has closed and there are no signs of infection.

How to care for superficial wounds at home?

  • Gently clean the wound and remove visible dirt without aggressive rubbing.
  • Protect the area with a plaster or dressing if the wound is exposed to friction, touch or dirt.
  • Change the plaster or dressing regularly, especially if it becomes wet or dirty.
  • Do not pick scabs, as this may prolong skin recovery.
  • Use repairing creams when the wound has closed and there is no discharge, bleeding or signs of infection.
  • Protect repaired skin from the sun, especially if the wound was on the face, hands or other exposed areas.

Pharmacist’s advice

With superficial wounds, proper cleaning, wound protection and monitoring the appearance of the skin during recovery are most important. If the wound becomes more painful, redness spreads, pus, unpleasant smell, swelling or fever appears, medical advice should be sought. Skin repair products should be used only after the skin surface has closed and when there are no signs of infection.
