Stanicid 20 mg/g ointment is a topical antibiotic for application to the skin. It contains sodium fusidate, corresponding to fusidic acid, and is prescribed for selected primary and secondary bacterial skin infections.
It acts primarily against susceptible strains of Staphylococcus aureus, certain streptococci and Corynebacterium minutissimum. It is intended for adults and children and is available only with a prescription.
Stanicid is not a universal ointment for every wound, spot, rash or area of redness. It does not treat fungal or viral infections and should not be used preventively without a confirmed indication. Frequent or prolonged use of fusidic acid can encourage bacterial resistance.

What is Stanicid used for?
Stanicid may be used alone or together with systemic treatment for skin infections caused by bacteria susceptible to fusidic acid.
Primary bacterial skin infections that may respond to treatment include:
- impetigo, with superficial blisters and yellowish crusts;
- superficial folliculitis, affecting the hair follicles;
- sycosis barbae, a persistent infection of beard follicles;
- paronychia, involving the skin surrounding a nail;
- erythrasma, a superficial bacterial infection in skin folds.
Secondary bacterial infections may include:
- infected eczematoid dermatitis;
- infected contact dermatitis;
- infected cuts, scratches and abrasions.
Redness and itching alone do not confirm a bacterial infection. Similar symptoms may be caused by allergy, fungi, viruses, irritation or another dermatological condition.
How is Stanicid applied?
- Wash and dry your hands before application.
- Clean the affected area when instructed by a healthcare professional.
- Apply a small amount of ointment to the affected skin.
- Rub it in gently without pressing on sensitive or damaged tissue.
- Wash your hands again unless the hands themselves are being treated.
Uncovered lesions are generally treated three or four times daily. Less frequent application may be sufficient when the area is covered with a dressing. A baby’s nappy may also act as an occlusive dressing.
The doctor determines treatment duration. Do not stop treatment independently as soon as the skin looks better, but do not continue it for longer or apply it more frequently than prescribed.
Antibiotic resistance
Frequent, prolonged or unnecessary use can allow resistant bacteria to survive. This may make fusidic acid less effective during a future infection.
Do not:
- use Stanicid preventively on every minor scratch;
- share the tube with another person;
- keep it for independent treatment of a future rash;
- combine it with another topical antibiotic without advice;
- use it over a large area or for an extended period without review.
Who must not use Stanicid?
Do not use the ointment if you are allergic to fusidic acid, sodium fusidate or another ingredient.
It contains lanolin and cetyl alcohol, which may cause local skin reactions such as contact dermatitis, redness and itching.
Use on the face and near the eyes
Particular care is required when the ointment is applied to the face. Avoid contact with the eyes because conjunctival irritation and burning may occur.
If it enters an eye:
- rinse the eye immediately with cool or lukewarm water;
- do not rub it;
- seek medical advice for pain, persistent redness or visual disturbance.
The ointment is for the skin only. Do not swallow it or independently use it inside the nose, mouth, eyes or another mucosal area.
Fire hazard
The paraffin base may accumulate on clothing, bedding and dressings and make them burn more easily. Washing reduces the amount of product but may not remove it completely.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Systemic exposure after topical application is negligible, and fusidic acid may be used during pregnancy when considered necessary by the doctor.
It may also be used during breastfeeding, but it must not be applied to the breast, where the infant could touch or ingest it.
Interactions with other products
Clinically important interactions with systemic medicines are considered unlikely because absorption from the skin is minimal.
Nevertheless, tell the doctor or pharmacist about every product applied to the same area. Do not independently layer an antiseptic, another antibiotic, corticosteroid, antifungal medicine, balm or cosmetic cream over Stanicid.
Possible side effects
Uncommon reactions include:
- pain or burning at the application site;
- irritation and redness;
- itching;
- contact dermatitis or eczema;
- different types of rash, including red, papular, blistering or pustular reactions.
Rare reactions include:
- hives;
- skin blisters;
- conjunctivitis following eye exposure;
- angioedema and other hypersensitivity reactions.
- difficulty breathing;
- swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat;
- a severe or rapidly spreading rash;
- marked blistering or hives;
- sudden worsening of the treated condition.
When is another examination required?
Contact a doctor if redness, swelling or pain is spreading, if pus increases, if red streaks extend from the affected area or if fever, chills or severe weakness develop.
A review is also required when the expected improvement does not occur. Possible explanations include resistant bacteria, an incorrect diagnosis, a deeper infection or the need for systemic treatment.
Missed application and accidental ingestion
Apply a missed dose when remembered and then continue according to the usual schedule. Do not apply a double-thickness layer.
Accidentally swallowing a very small amount is unlikely to cause serious harm. Contact a doctor or pharmacist if a larger amount is swallowed, particularly by a young child.
Use Stanicid for the period prescribed, but do not extend treatment independently. Wash your hands before application, do not touch the tube opening to infected skin and do not share the ointment. A rapidly spreading, painful or heavily purulent infection, particularly with fever, may require more than topical treatment. Stanicid is not appropriate for fungal infection, herpes, ordinary acne or an unexplained rash without a confirmed bacterial indication.

Antiseptics, dressings and skin-repair products do not replace Stanicid when a doctor has confirmed a bacterial infection and prescribed a topical antibiotic. Do not automatically apply another product over the ointment.

Composition, appearance and packaging
Each gram contains 20 mg of sodium fusidate.
Other ingredients are cetyl alcohol, lanolin, liquid paraffin and soft paraffin.
Stanicid is a transparent, homogeneous, pale-yellow ointment supplied in an aluminium tube containing 10 g.

Storage
Store below 25°C in the closed tube and keep out of the sight and reach of children.
After first opening, the ointment may be used until the expiry date printed on the packaging when it is correctly stored and the tube is properly closed.
Frequently asked questions
Is Stanicid an antibiotic?
Yes. It contains sodium fusidate, a topical antibiotic for selected bacterial skin infections.
Does Stanicid contain ciprofloxacin?
No. Stanicid ointment contains fusidic acid as sodium fusidate. It is not an oral antibiotic for respiratory or urinary infections.
How often is it applied?
Usually three or four times daily to an uncovered lesion. Less frequent application may be appropriate under a dressing.
Does it treat fungal infection?
No. Fusidic acid acts against selected bacteria, not fungi.
Is it an acne treatment?
It should not be used independently as a general acne treatment. A doctor must confirm an appropriate bacterial indication.
Can children use Stanicid?
It may be prescribed for children. The doctor determines the application schedule and duration.
Can it be used during pregnancy?
Topical use is possible when considered necessary by a doctor. Do not apply it to the breast during breastfeeding.
Can it be applied to an open wound?
It may be prescribed for bacterially infected cuts and abrasions. Deep, large, bite, puncture or heavily contaminated wounds require medical assessment.
