How do you use and disinfect the Microlife MT 50 digital thermometer?

Microlife MT 50 is a simple digital stick thermometer for measuring body temperature in the mouth, rectum or under the arm. As a maximum thermometer it displays the highest temperature reached during the measurement, with an accuracy of ±0.1 °C in the range between 34 °C and 42 °C.

According to the official Microlife instructions for use, the thermometer is water-resistant to IP67. For hygienic cleaning it can be wiped with 70% isopropyl alcohol or fully immersed in it – an advantage when the thermometer is shared at home.

Orally or rectally, the measurement takes about one minute; under the arm, at least five minutes. When the °C symbol stops flashing, the result can be read, and it stays in memory. One LR41 button battery is enough for about 4,500 measurements.

The thermometer meets the European standard for clinical thermometers EN 12470-3 and performs a self-test every time it is switched on; if "ERR" appears, it must not be used.

How to use

Switch the thermometer on with the ON/OFF button and wait until it is ready to measure. Then measure according to the method you have chosen:

Oral (about 1 minute): place the tip under the tongue, close your mouth and breathe through the nose. Do not eat or drink anything hot or cold for 10 minutes beforehand.
Rectal (about 1 minute): carefully insert the tip 2–3 cm into the anus.
Underarm (at least 5 minutes): place the tip in the armpit and keep the arm pressed to the body.
The measurement is finished when the °C symbol stops flashing (the temperature has risen by less than 0.1 °C in 16 seconds).
To view the last reading, hold the ON/OFF button for more than 3 seconds when switching on – the value is shown with the letter "M".

Who is it for?

MT 50 is intended for adults and children for measuring body temperature at home. It is especially practical for families who share one thermometer, because it can be disinfected completely. According to Microlife, rectal measurement in children under 3 years should only be performed by trained healthcare staff.

Important notes

Disinfection: wipe the thermometer with a 70% isopropyl alcohol swab from the middle towards the tip, or immerse it in 70% isopropyl alcohol for at least 5 minutes (up to 24 hours), then let it air-dry for 1 minute. Never boil it.
Use only in the mouth, rectum or armpit – not in the ear or at other sites. No rectal measurement in people with rectal disorders.
Do not leave children alone with the thermometer – it contains small parts that can be swallowed.
Microlife recommends an accuracy check every two years or after a fall.
A temperature reading is not a diagnosis. In case of high or persistent fever, contact a doctor.

Pharmacist's advice:

During an illness, always measure with the same method and write down the time and value – normal values differ by method (according to Microlife about 35.5–37.5 °C orally, 36.6–38.0 °C rectally and 34.7–37.3 °C under the arm), so mixing methods can be confusing.

After each use, disinfect the thermometer with 70% isopropyl alcohol, let it dry for a minute and store it clean and dry. For babies and small children, a non-contact or ear thermometer is often more convenient – rectal measurement in children under 3 should be left to trained staff.

Yes. According to the official instructions for use, it is rated IP67, and the whole thermometer may be immersed in 70% isopropyl alcohol for disinfection. It must never be boiled.

2. How long does a measurement take?

3. How do I know the measurement is finished?
