ACC AKUT 200 TUBE TABLETS

ACC Akut 200 mg effervescent tablets are a mucolytic medicine containing acetylcysteine. They are intended to loosen thick, viscous airway mucus and make it easier to clear by coughing.

Each effervescent tablet contains 200 mg of acetylcysteine. Dissolve the tablet in a glass of water and take it after a meal. The historical Serbian pack contained 20 effervescent tablets.

ACC Akut 200 mg – ingredients, use and precautions

What is ACC Akut 200 used for?

ACC Akut 200 is used to loosen and facilitate the clearance of thick airway mucus in respiratory conditions accompanied by a productive cough and difficult expectoration.

Acetylcysteine reduces mucus viscosity and makes it easier to cough up. Adequate fluid intake during the day may additionally support its mucolytic effect.

The medicine is not automatically suitable for a dry, irritating cough without mucus.

Recommended dosage

Adults and adolescents aged 14 years and over:

• one effervescent tablet two or three times daily;
• a total of 400–600 mg acetylcysteine daily.

Children and adolescents aged 6 to 14 years:

• one effervescent tablet twice daily;
• a total of 400 mg acetylcysteine daily.

Children aged 2 to 5 years:

• half an effervescent tablet two or three times daily;
• a total of 200–300 mg acetylcysteine daily.

The score line allows the tablet to be divided into two equal doses.

Preparation and administration

• Completely dissolve the tablet or half-tablet in a glass of water.
• Drink the entire contents of the glass after the tablet has dissolved.
• Take after a meal.
• Drink enough fluids during the day.
• Do not dissolve other medicines in the same glass.

A slight sulphur-like smell may be associated with acetylcysteine and does not necessarily indicate deterioration when the medicine is within its expiry date and has been stored correctly.

Duration of treatment

Consult a doctor if symptoms become worse or do not improve after four to five days. Longer treatment requires medical assessment.

Prolonged use for chronic respiratory conditions or cystic fibrosis must be supervised by a doctor.

Use in children

Mucolytic medicines must not be used in children under two years of age because increased loosened mucus and a limited ability to cough may obstruct the airways.

When must ACC Akut 200 not be taken?

• if you are allergic to acetylcysteine or another ingredient;
• by children under two years of age;
• if a doctor has determined that the formulation is unsuitable because of its excipients;
• in an active stomach or duodenal ulcer without prior medical assessment.

Warnings and precautions

Speak to a doctor or pharmacist before use if you:

• have bronchial asthma or a history of bronchospasm;
• have or have previously had a stomach or duodenal ulcer;
• have histamine intolerance;
• have difficulty coughing up mucus;
• have serious liver or kidney impairment;
• follow a sodium-controlled diet;
• have an intolerance to sugars listed on the specific package.

The amount of loosened bronchial mucus may increase at the beginning of treatment. Contact a doctor if you cannot clear it effectively.

Stop treatment and obtain medical advice immediately if new blistering, peeling skin or serious changes affecting the mouth or other mucous membranes occur.

Interactions with other medicines

• Cough suppressants: may reduce the cough reflex and cause dangerous mucus accumulation.
• Activated charcoal: may reduce the effect of acetylcysteine.
• Certain antibiotics: some tetracyclines, penicillins and aminoglycosides should be taken at least two hours apart from acetylcysteine.
• Nitroglycerin: concurrent use may increase vasodilation and lower blood pressure.
• Carbamazepine: acetylcysteine may affect its concentration and action.

Acetylcysteine may interfere with certain laboratory tests, including blood salicylate measurements and urine ketone tests.

Excipients and sodium

Effervescent tablets contain sodium compounds. People following a sodium-controlled diet should check the amount stated on the original package or leaflet.

ACC Akut 200 formulations marketed in different countries or periods may contain different excipients and sodium amounts. Do not copy the ingredient list from a foreign pack without checking the exact product.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Because experience is limited, acetylcysteine should be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding only when a doctor considers it necessary.

Driving and using machines

Acetylcysteine has no or negligible influence on the ability to drive and use machines.

Possible side effects

• headache and ringing in the ears;
• nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and diarrhoea;
• inflammation of the mouth and heartburn;
• rapid heartbeat and reduced blood pressure;
• fever;
• itching, rash and hives;
• swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat;
• bronchospasm and breathing difficulty, particularly in people with asthma.

Serious allergic reactions, bleeding and severe skin and mucosal reactions have been reported very rarely.

If too much is taken

Overdose may cause abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. Contact a doctor or pharmacist if more than the recommended amount has been taken.

If a dose is forgotten

Skip the missed dose and take the next dose at the usual time. Do not take a double dose.

Storage

• Keep out of the sight and reach of children.
• Store at a temperature of up to 30 °C.
• Keep in the original package to protect it from light and moisture.
• Close the tablet container securely after use.
• Do not use after the expiry date.
