ACC AKUT 200 BAGS

ACC 200, 200 mg powder for oral solution is a mucolytic medicine containing acetylcysteine. It is intended to loosen thick, viscous mucus in the airways and make it easier to clear by coughing.

Each sachet contains 200 mg of acetylcysteine. Dissolve the contents in a glass of water, tea or juice and take after a meal. The pack contains 20 sachets with 3 g of powder each.

What is ACC 200 used for?

ACC 200 is used for respiratory disorders involving excessive production of thick, viscous mucus that is difficult to cough up.

The official instructions include conditions such as:

• acute bronchitis;
• chronic bronchitis and its exacerbations;
• bronchiectasis;
• pulmonary emphysema;
• cystic fibrosis under medical supervision;
• other respiratory disorders accompanied by thick mucus and difficult expectoration.

Acetylcysteine reduces the thickness of bronchial mucus and makes it easier to clear. Adequate fluid intake may additionally support its mucolytic effect.

How is ACC 200 taken?

Adults:

• one sachet two to three times daily;
• the total daily dose is 400–600 mg of acetylcysteine.

Children aged 6 to 12 years:

• one sachet once or twice daily;
• the total daily dose is 200–400 mg of acetylcysteine.

Preparation:

• completely dissolve the contents in a glass of water, tea or juice;
• take after a meal;
• drink the prepared solution immediately;
• do not dissolve or mix other medicines in the same glass.

A slight sulphur-like smell may be caused by acetylcysteine and does not indicate that the medicine has deteriorated.

Duration of treatment

For acute symptoms, treatment usually lasts five to ten days. Contact a doctor if symptoms do not improve or become worse. Use beyond ten days and treatment of chronic respiratory conditions require medical supervision.

Use in children

This strength is not suitable for children aged two to six years. A formulation containing a smaller individual dose should be selected with advice from a paediatrician or pharmacist.

Mucolytics are contraindicated in children under two years because their airway characteristics and limited ability to clear mucus may result in bronchial obstruction.

When must ACC 200 not be taken?

• if you are allergic to acetylcysteine or another ingredient;
• by children under two years of age;
• in hereditary fructose or galactose intolerance;
• in glucose-galactose malabsorption;
• in lactase or sucrase-isomaltase deficiency.

Warnings and precautions

Speak to a doctor or pharmacist before use if you:

• have bronchial asthma or a history of bronchospasm;
• have or have previously had a stomach or duodenal ulcer;
• have histamine intolerance;
• have difficulty coughing up mucus;
• take other medicines that irritate the gastrointestinal lining;
• have diabetes or an inherited intolerance to certain sugars.

The amount of loosened bronchial mucus may increase at the beginning of treatment. Contact a doctor if you cannot cough it up effectively.

Acetylcysteine may affect certain laboratory tests, including blood salicylate measurements and urine ketone tests. Inform the healthcare professional that you are taking this medicine.

Interactions with other medicines

• Cough suppressants: concurrent use may cause dangerous mucus accumulation because the cough reflex is reduced.
• Antibiotics: tetracyclines, aminoglycosides and penicillins should be taken at least two hours apart from acetylcysteine. This does not apply to cefixime or loracarbef.
• Activated charcoal: may reduce the effect of acetylcysteine.
• Nitroglycerin: concurrent use may increase the reduction in blood pressure and cause headache.
• Carbamazepine: acetylcysteine may affect its concentration and action.

Do not dissolve other medicines together with ACC 200.

Important information about the ingredients

Each sachet contains 2.717 g of sucrose, corresponding to approximately 0.23 carbohydrate units. This should be considered by people with diabetes.

The product also contains glucose and lactose. Frequent or prolonged exposure to the sugar content may contribute to tooth decay.

Other ingredients are sucrose, ascorbic acid, saccharin and orange flavour containing lactose and glucose.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Because clinical data are limited, ACC 200 should be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding only when a doctor considers it essential.

Driving and using machines

ACC 200 does not affect the ability to drive or use machines.

Possible side effects

Uncommon side effects include:

• headache and ringing in the ears;
• rapid heartbeat and reduced blood pressure;
• nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and diarrhoea;
• inflammation of the mouth lining;
• fever;
• rash, itching, hives and hypersensitivity reactions;
• swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat.

Bronchospasm, breathing difficulty and indigestion may occur rarely. Severe allergic reactions and bleeding have been reported very rarely.

If too much ACC 200 is taken

Overdose may cause nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. Contact a doctor or the nearest medical facility if more than the recommended amount has been taken.

If a dose is forgotten

Skip the missed dose and continue according to the usual schedule. Do not take a double dose.

Storage

• Keep out of the sight and reach of children.
• Keep in the original package to protect it from light.
• No special storage temperature is required.
• Drink the prepared solution immediately.
• Do not use after the expiry date.
• Return unused medicines to a pharmacy collecting pharmaceutical waste.
