Pharmacist’s advice

Cowberry and American cranberry are not the same fruit. Most research on recurrent urinary tract infections concerns American cranberry or standardised cranberry preparations, so the same effect should not automatically be attributed to this juice.

The juice may be included in a varied diet and adequate fluid intake, but it does not treat an established bacterial infection. Persistent or worsening burning, urinary frequency or pain requires medical assessment.

Fever, chills, pain in the back or flank, nausea, vomiting or visible blood in the urine may indicate a more serious infection and requires prompt medical attention.

Dilute the recommended serving with water and consume it with a meal if the acidity causes discomfort. Dilution reduces acidity per sip but does not reduce the total sugar amount when the entire drink is consumed.
