Pancef – what is it used for and how should it be administered?

Depending on medical assessment, cefixime may be prescribed for certain bacterial infections of the middle ear, upper and lower respiratory tract and urinary tract.

400 mg tablets are intended for adults and children over 10 years of age or weighing more than 50 kg. The official leaflet states a recommended daily dose of 400 mg, taken once daily or divided into two 200 mg doses. This is not a self-dosing instruction.

100 mg/5 mL oral suspension may be used in adults and children over six months of age. The paediatric dose must be calculated according to body weight by a doctor. The official product information states 8 mg/kg daily as a general paediatric regimen.

  • Shake the suspension thoroughly before every dose.
  • Use the measuring spoon supplied with the medicine.
  • Do not use an ordinary household teaspoon for dosing.
  • The prepared suspension remains usable for 14 days when stored below 25°C.
  • Safety in infants under six months of age has not been established.
Important warning

Take Pancef only when prescribed and complete the course determined by the doctor. Do not save leftover antibiotic for a future illness or give it to another person.

Incorrect, unnecessary or prematurely discontinued antibiotic use increases the risk of treatment failure, recurrent infection and antimicrobial resistance.

Do not take Pancef if you are allergic to cefixime or another cephalosporin. Tell the doctor about a previous severe reaction to penicillin or another beta-lactam antibiotic.

Particular caution is required in patients with kidney impairment, previous antibiotic-associated colitis, a history of serious drug-related skin reactions or treatment with warfarin or another oral anticoagulant.

Cefixime may cause nausea, vomiting, abdominal discomfort, diarrhoea, headache, dizziness, rash, itching, candidal infections and changes in liver, kidney or blood-test results.

When should immediate medical help be sought?
  • difficulty breathing or swallowing or swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat;
  • a widespread rash, blistering or peeling skin;
  • severe, persistent or bloody diarrhoea;
  • seizures, confusion or impaired consciousness;
  • unusual bleeding or bruising;
  • blood in the urine or markedly reduced urination;
  • yellowing of the skin or the whites of the eyes.
Pharmacist’s advice

Confirm the prescribed dosage form before the first dose. The 400 mg tablet and paediatric suspension are not directly interchangeable without recalculating the dose.

Shake the suspension before every measurement and write the preparation date on the carton. Discard any remainder after 14 days.

Bacterial probiotic cultures are generally taken approximately two hours apart from an antibiotic. Probiotic yeast is not directly susceptible to antibacterial antibiotics, although the instructions for each specific or combination product must be followed.
