Who is the Omron 22–32 cm cuff for M3 Intellisense right for, and how do you choose between it and the larger cuff?

The Omron 22–32 cm cuff is a medium-size replacement upper arm cuff intended for the Omron M3 Intellisense blood pressure monitor. According to the manual for this monitor (HEM-7051-E), it is supplied with exactly this medium cuff for upper arm circumferences of 22 to 32 cm.

The M3 Intellisense is a fully automatic monitor that measures using the oscillometric method. If your original cuff is worn, damaged or lost and your arm is still within 22–32 cm, this cuff is a direct replacement for the one supplied with the monitor.

For users with fuller upper arms there is also a larger 22–42 cm cuff for the same monitor. Choosing the right size matters for accuracy: a cuff that is too small for the arm cannot give a reliable result.

Check your upper arm circumference before buying: the cuff may only be used on an upper arm within the stated range and only with the monitor it is intended for.

How to use

Fitting according to Omron's instructions for upper arm cuffs:

Remove tight or thick clothing from the upper arm – the cuff is placed on the bare arm.
Push the air plug fully into the air jack of the M3 Intellisense.
Put your hand through the cuff loop and position it so that the bottom edge is 1–2 cm above the inside of the elbow, with the air tube on the inside of the arm, in line with the middle finger.
Wrap the cuff firmly so that it cannot move around the arm.
Do not kink the tube during measurement; Omron recommends always measuring on the same arm.

Who is it for?

Users of the Omron M3 Intellisense with an upper arm circumference of 22 to 32 cm who need a new cuff of the same size as the original. People whose upper arm measures more than 32 cm should choose the 22–42 cm cuff.

Important notes

Use the cuff only with the monitor it is intended for – an incompatible cuff affects measurement accuracy.
Do not use it on an injured arm, an arm under medical treatment, or during an IV drip or blood transfusion; it is not intended for infants, children or people who cannot express themselves.
Keep the air tube and small parts out of the reach of children because of the risk of strangulation and choking.
Wipe the cuff with a soft dry cloth or a soft cloth lightly moistened with mild neutral detergent; do not wash it, do not immerse it in water and do not use abrasive cleaners, petrol or thinners.
When disconnecting, pull the plastic plug rather than the tube itself. Store it away from extreme temperatures, humidity, direct sunlight, dust and bleach vapours.

If you are undecided between this cuff and the larger one, the deciding factor is your upper arm circumference measured with a tape measure halfway between the shoulder and the elbow. Up to 32 cm this medium cuff fits better; if you are right at the limit or above it, choose the 22–42 cm cuff.

With older monitors such as the M3 Intellisense, the cuff usually wears out before the device itself: the hook-and-loop fastening holds less well and the fabric loosens. If you notice the cuff shifting during measurement or the readings becoming inconsistent, replace it – and discuss consistently raised values with your doctor.
