How does GC MI Paste Plus Melon protect enamel against acids, erosion and dry mouth?
GC MI Paste Plus Melon is a topical tooth crème from the Japanese company GC, which specialises in dental materials. It is not a regular toothpaste for brushing: it is applied after brushing and left on the teeth to supply the enamel with calcium, phosphate and fluoride.
The crème is based on the patented complex RECALDENT™ (CPP-ACP) – casein phosphopeptide with amorphous calcium phosphate, derived from the milk protein casein. According to the manufacturer, CPP keeps calcium and phosphate in an amorphous form very similar to the minerals of saliva, reduces enamel demineralisation and promotes its remineralisation. The added 900 ppm fluoride (0.2%) roughly corresponds to the strength of an adult toothpaste.
In its instructions GC states that the crème provides a protective coating on the teeth in cases of enamel erosion, dry mouth (xerostomia) and Sjögren's syndrome, and its patient leaflet also mentions erosion caused by reflux or morning sickness in pregnancy. Melon is one of five flavours of the same formula.
Key benefits:
- Supplies enamel with calcium, phosphate and fluoride in one product.
- GC indicates it as a protective coating for erosion and dry mouth.
- According to GC, it helps enamel after acid attacks from food and drinks.
- 900 ppm fluoride – a level close to adult toothpaste.
- Mild fruity melon flavour; 40 g (35 ml) tube.

How to use
Use the crème after brushing your teeth, as recommended by your dentist. Apply a pea-sized amount for each arch to all teeth with a clean finger or a cotton swab. Leave it on for at least 3 minutes, then spread the rest around the mouth with your tongue. Afterwards spit out the excess and, if possible, do not rinse.
Do not eat or drink for the next 30 minutes. In its patient leaflet GC describes use once a day at night or twice a day (morning and night); confirm the frequency with your dentist.
Who is it for?
According to the manufacturer's indications, the crème is intended for adults and children aged 6 and over whose enamel is exposed to acids: with enamel erosion, dry mouth, frequent acidic drinks, reflux or vomiting in pregnancy. Use is agreed with a dentist.
Important notes
- Do not use with a proven or suspected milk protein (casein) allergy – CPP-ACP is derived from milk.
- Do not use with a sensitivity to benzoate preservatives (hydroxybenzoates); GC's leaflet also mentions soybean products.
- Not recommended for children under 6; overnight use is not recommended for children under 12.
- If swelling of the lips, tongue or face occurs, stop using it and see a doctor.
- Store in a cool, dry place at 8–25 °C, away from direct sunlight.
Pharmacist's advice:
After an acidic drink, citrus fruit or an episode of reflux, do not brush straight away – softened enamel wears more easily at that moment. Rinse your mouth with water, wait about half an hour, then brush with a soft toothbrush and apply MI Paste Plus.
With a dry mouth, sip water throughout the day and ask your doctor whether the dryness may be caused by medicines you take. Before the first use, make sure you are not allergic to milk proteins; casein is a main ingredient of this crème, not a trace.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
1. Is MI Paste Plus Melon a toothpaste for brushing?
No. Brush your teeth with your usual toothpaste, then apply MI Paste Plus and leave it to act. It complements brushing; it does not replace it.
2. Can I use it if I have a dry mouth?
Yes – GC lists dry mouth (xerostomia) and Sjögren's syndrome among the indications. The cause of the dryness should still be assessed by a doctor or dentist.
3. How does it differ from GC Tooth Mousse Melon?
Both crèmes contain RECALDENT™ (CPP-ACP) and share the same flavour, but Tooth Mousse is fluoride-free, while MI Paste Plus contains 900 ppm fluoride.
4. May I use it during pregnancy?
GC lists pregnant women as a group that may benefit, especially with erosion due to morning sickness. If you are allergic to milk proteins, do not use the crème.
