This medicine is currently not marketed in Serbia

  • A medicine called Kandesartan Sandoz (Candesartan Sandoz) is not authorised in Serbia (ALIMS) and cannot be obtained in pharmacies in Serbia, including ApotekaOnline.
  • This name does not appear in the National Medicines Register 2019 and 2021 or in the ALIMS lists of new and renewed authorisations 2018–2026. In these sources, no authorised medicine containing candesartan is currently found.
  • If you take a medicine for blood pressure or heart failure, do not stop treatment on your own – a replacement is decided by the doctor.
  • This page is for information only and is not an offer to sell the medicine.

Candesartan Sandoz is a generic medicine from Sandoz in the form of tablets (in the EU in strengths of 8 mg, 16 mg and 32 mg) containing candesartan cilexetil, an angiotensin II receptor antagonist (“sartan”, ATC C09CA06). It is authorised in several European countries, for example in Belgium.

According to the official summary of product characteristics of the Belgian medicines agency (FAMHP/FAGG, revision 03/2025), the medicine is used to treat essential hypertension and certain forms of heart failure. All information on this page comes from the official documentation listed in the sources.

What is candesartan used for in countries where it is authorised?

According to the Belgian SmPC (Candesartan Sandoz, revision 03/2025), the medicine is intended for:

  • treatment of essential hypertension (high blood pressure) in adults
  • treatment of hypertension in children and adolescents aged 6 to less than 18 years
  • treatment of adults with heart failure and reduced systolic function (left ventricular ejection fraction ≤ 40%) when ACE inhibitors are not tolerated, or as add-on to an ACE inhibitor in symptomatic heart failure despite optimal therapy, when mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists are not tolerated

How is it used?

Candesartan is taken once a day. According to the official documentation, in hypertension the usual starting and maintenance dose is 8 mg once daily, with most of the effect reached within 4 weeks, and the dose may be increased if necessary up to a maximum of 32 mg per day. In heart failure, treatment starts with a lower dose (4 mg) that is gradually increased, with monitoring of kidney function and potassium.

This information describes the official EU product information and is not an individual recommendation – the choice of medicine and dosage are decided by the doctor according to the official information for a medicine authorised in Serbia.

Important safety information from the official documentation

  • The medicine must not be used in case of hypersensitivity to candesartan cilexetil, in the second and third trimester of pregnancy, in severe hepatic impairment and/or cholestasis, in children under 1 year, or together with aliskiren in patients with diabetes or reduced kidney function (GFR < 60 mL/min/1.73 m²).
  • In renal artery stenosis, urea and creatinine may rise; blood potassium should be checked periodically, especially in heart failure.
  • Dual blockade of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (combination with an ACE inhibitor or aliskiren) is not recommended because of the risk of low blood pressure, hyperkalaemia and kidney damage.
  • Potassium-sparing diuretics, potassium supplements, potassium-containing salt substitutes and heparin may increase blood potassium; concomitant use with lithium is not recommended; NSAIDs may reduce the blood-pressure-lowering effect and increase the risk of kidney damage.
  • Common side effects in hypertension are respiratory infections, dizziness and headache, and in heart failure hyperkalaemia, low blood pressure and impaired kidney function; angioedema is very rare.
  • It is not recommended in the first trimester of pregnancy and is contraindicated in the second and third; if pregnancy is diagnosed, the medicine is stopped immediately. It is not recommended during breast-feeding. Dizziness or tiredness may occasionally occur, which should be kept in mind when driving.

What is available in Serbia?

In the National Medicines Register 2019, the only medicine containing candesartan alone was Karbis® (Krka), whose authorisation for the 8 mg strength ceased to be valid in December 2018. No authorised medicine containing candesartan was found in the National Medicines Register 2021, in the ALIMS lists of new and renewed authorisations up to 2026, or in the list of interchangeable medicines (May 2026).

For the treatment of high blood pressure, other medicines from the same group (sartans) are authorised in Serbia, according to the ALIMS list of interchangeable medicines of May 2026:

OptionWhat it isNote
Other sartans: losartan, valsartan, irbesartan, telmisartan (and their combinations with hydrochlorothiazide)medicines of the same angiotensin II receptor antagonist group, prescription-onlynot the same medicine; doses cannot simply be converted – the medicine and dose are chosen by the doctor based on blood pressure, kidneys, potassium and other conditions
Medicines from other groups for blood pressure or heart failuree.g. ACE inhibitors, calcium channel blockers, diuretics, beta blockersthe choice depends on the diagnosis and other conditions and is made only by the doctor

A replacement medicine must always be chosen by a doctor. A pharmacist can help you choose suitable supportive products and care, but cannot replace the treatment prescribed by your doctor.

When to seek medical help immediately?

  • swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, difficulty breathing or swallowing (angioedema)
  • severe dizziness or fainting, especially when standing up
  • marked muscle weakness, irregular heartbeat (possible high potassium)
  • markedly reduced urination or swelling
  • sudden severe abdominal pain with nausea and vomiting (very rarely intestinal angioedema)

Pharmacist’s advice

If you received candesartan abroad, bring the pack or leaflet to your doctor – they will choose a suitable medicine authorised in Serbia and set the dose. Until your appointment, do not stop treatment abruptly and do not double doses.

With any blood pressure medicine it is useful to measure your blood pressure at home, at the same time of day, and record the results – this helps the doctor assess the effect of new treatment. While taking sartans, do not take potassium supplements or potassium-containing salt substitutes on your own, and use NSAID painkillers only on a pharmacist’s advice.

Frequently asked questions

Can Kandesartan Sandoz be bought in Serbia?

No. A medicine under this name is not authorised in Serbia, and in the available ALIMS sources up to 2026 no authorised medicine containing candesartan is currently found.

What can replace candesartan?

Other sartans are authorised in Serbia, e.g. losartan, valsartan, irbesartan and telmisartan, as well as medicines from other blood pressure groups. They are not the same medicine and doses cannot simply be converted – the replacement is decided by the doctor.

Can candesartan be used during pregnancy?

It is not recommended in the first trimester and is contraindicated in the second and third trimester. Women planning pregnancy should switch with their doctor to a treatment that is safe in pregnancy, and if pregnancy is diagnosed, the medicine is stopped immediately.

Can I take potassium or painkillers with candesartan?

Potassium supplements and potassium-containing salt substitutes may increase blood potassium, and NSAIDs may weaken the blood-pressure-lowering effect and strain the kidneys. Ask a doctor or pharmacist before using such products.
