Fluimucil 600 mg effervescent tablets contain 600 mg of acetylcysteine per tablet. Acetylcysteine is a mucolytic medicine that reduces the viscosity of thick bronchial mucus and makes it easier to clear by coughing.
This strength and pharmaceutical form are intended only for adults with acute or chronic respiratory conditions accompanied by excessive production of thick mucus and difficulty expectorating.
Fluimucil 600 is not intended to suppress a dry cough without mucus. Do not combine it on your own with cough suppressants, because reducing the cough reflex may cause thinned mucus to remain trapped in the airways.
This 600 mg strength is intended only for adults. Do not divide the tablet to create a dose for a child or adolescent.
Fluimucil 600 mg – uses, dosage and precautions
What is Fluimucil 600 used for?
Fluimucil 600 is used for respiratory disorders associated with excessive production of thick, viscous mucus, including:
- acute bronchitis;
- chronic bronchitis and its exacerbations;
- bronchiectasis;
- pulmonary emphysema;
- cystic fibrosis.
Acetylcysteine breaks chemical bonds that contribute to mucus viscosity, making the mucus thinner and easier to cough up. It does not treat the underlying cause of a respiratory infection and does not replace an antibiotic when antibiotic treatment is required.
How is Fluimucil 600 taken?
| Users | Dose | Method of use |
|---|---|---|
| Adults | 1 effervescent tablet once daily | Dissolve in half a glass of water and drink immediately, preferably in the evening |
| Children and adolescents | This strength is not intended for this population | Do not divide the tablet to produce a paediatric dose |
The maximum total daily dose is 600 mg of acetylcysteine. Do not take another medicine or supplement containing acetylcysteine or NAC at the same time unless a doctor or pharmacist has checked the total daily amount.
Place the tablet in half a glass of water, allow it to dissolve completely and drink the entire solution immediately. Do not mix the prepared solution with other medicines.
A mild sulphur-like smell is characteristic of acetylcysteine and does not mean that the medicine has deteriorated.
How long is treatment continued?
For acute symptoms, treatment generally lasts 5 to 10 days. Consult a doctor if symptoms persist, recur or become worse.
Treatment lasting longer than 10 days, including prolonged treatment for chronic respiratory conditions, must be prescribed and supervised by a doctor.
When must Fluimucil 600 not be used?
- if you are allergic to acetylcysteine or any other ingredient;
- in children under two years of age, in whom mucolytic medicines are contraindicated;
- during pregnancy or breastfeeding without a doctor's explicit decision and supervision;
- together with cough suppressants unless specifically directed by a doctor.
Although the general contraindication for acetylcysteine includes children under two years of age, the specific Fluimucil 600 mg pack is labelled for adults only.
When is additional caution required?
Consult a doctor or pharmacist before use if you:
- have bronchial asthma;
- have or previously had a stomach or duodenal ulcer;
- take medicines that irritate the gastrointestinal mucosa;
- have histamine intolerance;
- have difficulty coughing up increased amounts of mucus;
- need to restrict your sodium intake;
- have phenylketonuria or intolerance to certain sugars.
At the beginning of treatment, the mucus may become thinner but its volume may increase. Medical advice is required if the patient cannot cough it up effectively.
Stop treatment immediately if bronchospasm, choking or breathing difficulty develops.
Interactions with other medicines
- Cough suppressants: reduced cough reflex may cause mucus retention.
- Antibiotics: oral antibiotics and acetylcysteine should be taken at least two hours apart. This does not apply to loracarbef.
- Activated charcoal: may reduce the effect of acetylcysteine.
- Nitroglycerin: combined use may cause a marked reduction in blood pressure and headache.
Acetylcysteine may interfere with certain laboratory tests for salicylates in the blood and ketone bodies in the urine. Tell the healthcare professional that you are using Fluimucil before testing.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Do not use Fluimucil 600 on your own during pregnancy or breastfeeding. It may be used only when a doctor considers it necessary and under direct medical supervision.
Possible side effects
Uncommon effects include hypersensitivity, headache, ringing in the ears, rapid heartbeat, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, inflammation of the mouth, rash, itching, hives, angioedema, fever and reduced blood pressure.
Rare effects include bronchospasm, difficulty breathing and indigestion.
Very rare effects include severe allergic reactions and bleeding. Very rare serious skin and mucosal reactions, including Stevens–Johnson syndrome and Lyell syndrome, have also been reported.
- difficulty breathing, choking or bronchospasm;
- swelling of the face, lips, tongue, mouth or throat;
- difficulty swallowing;
- a widespread rash, blistering, skin peeling or mucosal lesions;
- a marked fall in blood pressure, fainting or severe weakness;
- unusual or prolonged bleeding;
- an inability to cough up an increased amount of mucus.
Sodium, aspartame and glucose
- Each tablet contains 156.9 mg of sodium, equivalent to approximately 7.8% of the recommended maximum daily sodium intake for an adult.
- The medicine contains aspartame, a source of phenylalanine that may be harmful to patients with phenylketonuria.
- The lemon flavour contains glucose.
Patients who must restrict sodium, have phenylketonuria or have been diagnosed with intolerance to certain sugars should seek advice before use.

Use Fluimucil 600 for a productive cough with thick mucus, not to suppress a dry cough. One tablet already provides the maximum recommended daily dose of 600 mg, so do not combine it with another medicine or supplement containing acetylcysteine or NAC.
Although the official leaflet recommends taking the dose preferably in the evening, patients who experience increased coughing after mucus becomes thinner should discuss the most suitable administration time with a doctor or pharmacist.
A cough accompanied by breathing difficulty, chest pain, coughing up blood, high fever or worsening general condition requires medical assessment.

Related products and alternatives
| Category | Product | Important information |
|---|---|---|
| Expectorant products | Dietpharm MukoNAC, 10 sachets | Contains NAC; an alternative rather than a product for simultaneous use |
| Productive cough support | Max Medica MaxoMucil 600 | A related NAC preparation; do not combine it with Fluimucil |
Important: NAC products are listed as related alternatives, not as products to take together. Combining them may unnecessarily exceed the intended total daily acetylcysteine dose.
Is Fluimucil 600 an antibiotic?
No. It contains acetylcysteine, a mucolytic that thins thick mucus. It does not treat a bacterial infection.
Is it suitable for a dry cough?
No. It is intended for a productive cough associated with thick mucus and difficulty expectorating.
How often is it taken?
Adults take one effervescent tablet once daily. The total daily dose must not exceed 600 mg.
Can children take Fluimucil 600?
No. This strength and pack are intended only for adults. Other strengths and pharmaceutical forms may be more appropriate for younger patients, but they require age-appropriate professional advice.
How long should I wait between an antibiotic and Fluimucil?
A gap of at least two hours is recommended between an oral antibiotic and acetylcysteine. Loracarbef is the exception stated in the leaflet.
May the tablet be swallowed whole?
No. It must be dissolved in half a glass of water and the solution should be consumed immediately.
