Saccharomyces boulardii – Probiotic Yeast in Capsules and Sachets
Saccharomyces boulardii is a probiotic yeast. Unlike most probiotics it is not a bacterium, so antibiotics do not affect it – which is why it can be taken at the same time as antibiotic treatment.
This category is part of Probiotics for adults, children and babies. It is most often chosen during and after antibiotics, when travelling and when the diet changes.

How to take S. boulardii
- With antibiotics, start on the same day and continue for a few days after treatment, as directed
- Do not mix the capsule or sachet contents with hot drinks – heat destroys the yeast
- For small children the capsule can be opened and mixed with cold food or drink, if the leaflet allows it
- With diarrhoea, replacing fluids is just as important – see Electrolytes and oral rehydration
When to see a doctor
- blood or mucus in the stool, high fever or severe abdominal pain
- signs of dehydration – dry mouth, passing little urine, drowsiness; in babies and young children immediately
- diarrhoea lasting longer than two to three days, or severe diarrhoea starting after antibiotics
- people with severely weakened immunity or a central venous catheter should not take S. boulardii without medical advice
Pharmacist’s adviceS. boulardii and bacterial probiotics can be combined, as they play different roles. If you take an antifungal medicine (e.g. fluconazole), it also acts on the yeast – ask a pharmacist for advice. Check the leaflet before use: the dose and the minimum age differ from product to product. |
