GENTIAN ROOT TEA – cut gentian root (Gentiana lutea) for preparing tea, 50 g
- Stock: In Stock
- Model: 18052021
What is gentian root tea traditionally used for and how is it prepared?
Gentian root tea contains 50 g of cut root of the great yellow gentian (Gentiana lutea L.), one of the best-known bitter plants of traditional European herbal medicine. The root is used to prepare a herbal tea (infusion).
Gentian is known for its intensely bitter taste, which comes from bitter glycosides such as amarogentin, gentiopicrin, swertiamarin and sweroside. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) states that gentian root preparations, on the basis of long-standing traditional use, are used for temporary loss of appetite and mild digestive complaints such as indigestion. This use is based solely on tradition, not on clinical studies.
This is a single-herb loose tea without additives, so you can adjust the amount and strength of the drink to the instructions on the pack.
Key benefits:
- Pure cut gentian root, without additives.
- A traditional bitter herb of European herbal medicine.
- 50 g loose pack for preparing an infusion.
- Bitter substances (amarogentin, gentiopicrin) give the characteristic bitter taste.
Composition and features
Composition: 100% cut gentian root (Gentiana lutea L., Gentianae radix). The root contains bitter secoiridoid glycosides (amarogentin, gentiopicrin, swertiamarin, sweroside) and bitter-tasting sugars (gentianose, gentiobiose), which is why the infusion is very bitter.
How to prepare
Prepare the tea according to the instructions on the pack. For information, the EMA monograph on gentian root as a herbal tea describes an infusion of 0.6–2 g of cut root in 150 ml of boiling water, 1–3 times a day, about half an hour before meals (up to 6 g per day in total), for adults only. If complaints last longer than two weeks or get worse, consult a doctor.
Who is it for?
Adults who want a traditional bitter herbal tea. Use in children and adolescents under 18 years is not recommended because safety has not been established.
Important notes
- Not recommended during pregnancy and breastfeeding, as safety has not been established.
- Do not use in case of hypersensitivity to gentian.
- Professional literature lists gastric or duodenal ulcer as a contraindication.
- Store in a cool, dry place in a tightly closed pack, out of the reach of children.
Pharmacist's advice:
Gentian tea is very bitter, and this bitterness is part of its traditional purpose, so do not sweeten it heavily. Drink it before meals, not after. If you suffer from heartburn or reflux, or have had a stomach ulcer in the past, talk to a pharmacist or doctor before use.
Loss of appetite or digestive complaints lasting longer than two weeks, as well as unintentional weight loss, are a reason to see a doctor – a herbal tea should not delay a diagnosis.
Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Intensely bitter. The bitterness comes from the root's natural bitter substances, primarily amarogentin and gentiopicrin.
2. When should gentian tea be drunk?

3. Can children drink gentian tea?
It is not recommended for children and adolescents under 18 years of age, as safety in this group has not been established.
4. Is gentian tea safe during pregnancy?
Use during pregnancy and breastfeeding is not recommended because there is not enough safety data.
