ACC AKUT 600 SUMMER TABLET

Each effervescent tablet contains 600 mg of acetylcysteine. Dissolve the tablet in a glass of water and take it after a meal. The pack contains 10 individually wrapped effervescent tablets.

What is ACC Akut 600 used for?

The medicine is used as secretolytic treatment in acute and chronic bronchopulmonary conditions accompanied by impaired mucus production and transport, thick secretions and difficult expectoration.

Acetylcysteine reduces the viscosity of bronchial mucus and makes it easier to cough up. Adequate fluid intake additionally supports the mucolytic effect.

It is primarily intended for a productive cough with mucus and is not automatically suitable for a dry, irritating cough.

Recommended dosage

Adults and adolescents aged 14 years and over:

• half an effervescent tablet twice daily; or
• one effervescent tablet once daily.

Both regimens provide a total daily dose of 600 mg acetylcysteine.

The score line allows the tablet to be divided into two equal doses.

Preparation and administration

• Completely dissolve the tablet or half-tablet in a glass of water.
• Drink the solution immediately after preparation.
• Take only after a meal.
• Drink enough fluids during treatment.
• Do not dissolve other medicines in the same glass.

The prepared solution is clear to slightly opalescent and has a blackberry flavour. A slight sulphur-like smell may be associated with acetylcysteine and does not necessarily indicate deterioration.

Duration of treatment

Do not use for longer than four to five days without medical advice. Contact a doctor if symptoms do not improve or become worse.

Longer treatment of chronic bronchitis, cystic fibrosis or another chronic respiratory condition must be prescribed and supervised by a doctor.

Use in children

ACC Akut 600 must not be used by children or adolescents under 14 years of age because of the high concentration of the active substance.

When must ACC Akut 600 not be taken?

• if you are allergic to acetylcysteine or another ingredient;
• if you are under 14 years of age;
• in hereditary galactose intolerance, lactase deficiency or glucose-galactose malabsorption;
• in hereditary fructose intolerance because the product contains sorbitol.

Warnings and precautions

Speak to a doctor or pharmacist before use if you:

• have bronchial asthma or a history of bronchospasm;
• have or have previously had a stomach or duodenal ulcer;
• have histamine intolerance;
• have difficulty coughing up mucus;
• take medicines that irritate the gastrointestinal lining;
• follow a sodium-controlled diet.

The amount of loosened mucus may increase at the beginning of treatment. Professional measures may be required if you cannot clear it effectively.

Stop taking the medicine and seek immediate medical advice if new blistering, peeling skin or lesions affecting the mouth or other mucous membranes develop.

Interactions with other medicines

• Cough suppressants: may reduce the cough reflex and cause dangerous mucus accumulation.
• Activated charcoal: may reduce the effect of acetylcysteine.
• Antibiotics: tetracyclines, penicillins and aminoglycosides should be taken at least two hours apart. This does not apply to cefixime and loracarbef.
• Nitroglycerin: concurrent use may cause a marked fall in blood pressure and headache.
• Carbamazepine: acetylcysteine may reduce its concentration and effectiveness.

Acetylcysteine may affect blood salicylate measurements and urine ketone tests. Inform the healthcare professional before laboratory testing.

Indigestion, heartburn, bronchospasm and breathing difficulty may occur rarely, particularly in people with asthma.

Anaphylactic shock, other serious allergic reactions and bleeding have been reported very rarely. Facial swelling may occur with unknown frequency.

Overdose may cause nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. Contact a doctor or pharmacist if more than the recommended amount has been taken.
