Soltrik is a medicine in the form of an oral suspension (light pink, strawberry flavour) containing the active substance mebendazole – 100 mg in 5 mL. It belongs to the group of anthelmintics (medicines against intestinal parasites), benzimidazole derivatives (ATC P02CA01). It is made by Galenika AD Beograd.
Soltrik is used to treat intestinal infections caused by roundworms – pinworm (Enterobius vermicularis, the cause of enterobiasis), large roundworm and other roundworms – in adults and children over 2 years of age. Worm infections can affect anyone and do not necessarily indicate poor hygiene, but hygiene measures are key to preventing reinfection and spread within the family.

What is Soltrik used for?
According to the official Patient Information Leaflet, Soltrik is used in adults and children over 2 years of age to treat intestinal infections caused by roundworms:
- enterobiasis – pinworm (threadworm) infection (Enterobius vermicularis);
- other roundworm infections and mixed infections: ascariasis (large roundworm), trichuriasis (whipworm), ancylostomiasis and necatoriasis (hookworms).
The leaflet does not list tapeworms among the indications for Soltrik.
How is it used and dosed?

Special patient groups
- Children under 2 years: effects have not been studied and no dosing recommendations can be made; the medicine is given only if prescribed by a doctor (especially under one year).
- Pregnant women: the medicine must not be used.
- Breastfeeding women: ask a doctor or pharmacist before use.
Contraindications – when the medicine must not be used
Do not take Soltrik:
- if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to mebendazole or any of the excipients;
- during pregnancy.
Precautions and warnings
- The medicine is not used in children under 2 years without a doctor's recommendation; convulsions have been reported, even in infants.
- The medicine contains sucrose and liquid glucose – if you have an intolerance to some sugars, consult your doctor.
- It contains methyl and propyl parahydroxybenzoate (E218, E216), which may cause allergic reactions (possibly delayed), and the colour Allura Red AC (E129), which may cause allergic reactions.
- It contains 100 mg propylene glycol in 5 mL (20 mg/mL); sodium – less than 1 mmol (23 mg) per mL.
Hygiene measures (for at least 6 weeks from the start of treatment):
- cut nails regularly; avoid nail biting and thumb sucking;
- wear pyjamas or underwear at night;
- wash the area around the anus thoroughly every morning;
- each family member uses their own towel;
- change clothes regularly, wash and iron bed linen;
- wash hands and nails well after using the toilet and before every meal.
Interactions with other medicines, alcohol and food
Be sure to tell your doctor or pharmacist if you use:
- metronidazole (a medicine for certain infections);
- cimetidine (a medicine for excess stomach acid).
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Do not take Soltrik if you are pregnant, think you may be pregnant or are planning a pregnancy. If you are breastfeeding, ask a doctor or pharmacist before use.
Driving and using machines
Soltrik has no effect on the ability to drive and use machines.
Possible side effects
- Common (up to 1 in 10): stomach pain.
- Uncommon (up to 1 in 100): stomach discomfort, diarrhoea, flatulence, nausea or vomiting.
- Rare (up to 1 in 1,000): rash, inflammation of the liver (hepatitis), changes in liver enzyme values, kidney inflammation, low neutrophil count (greater susceptibility to infections), hair loss, dizziness.
- Serious reactions (stop the medicine immediately): severe allergic reaction, blistering of the skin and mucous membranes, convulsions.
Report suspected side effects to your doctor, pharmacist or ALIMS.
Overdose, missed dose and stopping treatment
- Overdose: contact a doctor or go to hospital immediately.
- Missed dose: take it as soon as you remember; if it is time for the next dose, skip the missed one. Do not take a double dose.
When to seek medical help immediately?
- sudden swelling of the face or throat, hives, severe irritation or redness of the skin
- blisters on the skin, in the mouth, eyes or genital area
- strong, uncontrolled muscle spasms (convulsions), especially in young children
- accidental intake of a larger amount of suspension
Pharmacist's advice
For pinworm, a single dose destroys the parasites, but eggs may remain on hands, bed linen and under the nails – so the hygiene measures in the leaflet are just as important as the medicine itself, for at least 6 weeks. It is often practical for the doctor to assess treatment for other household members at the same time.
Always shake the bottle well and measure only with the enclosed 5 mL spoon. Use an opened bottle within 21 days, and in children under 2 years use the medicine only on a doctor's recommendation.

Storage

Frequently asked questions
How many doses of Soltrik are needed for pinworm?
For pinworm (enterobiasis), a single 5 mL dose is enough. If reinfection is suspected, the doctor may prescribe another dose after 2 weeks.
Does Soltrik work against tapeworm?
The Soltrik leaflet lists only roundworm infections (enterobiasis, ascariasis, trichuriasis, ancylostomiasis, necatoriasis). Tapeworms are not listed among the indications.
Can Soltrik be given to a child under 2 years?
Only on a doctor's recommendation. Effects in children under 2 years have not been studied, and convulsions have been reported, even in infants.
Should the whole family be treated?
The leaflet stresses hygiene measures for the whole family for at least 6 weeks to prevent spread and reinfection. Treatment of other household members is decided by a doctor.
