This medicine is currently not marketed in Serbia

  • Redergin currently has no valid marketing authorisation in Serbia (ALIMS) and cannot be obtained in Serbian pharmacies, including ApotekaOnline.
  • There is no medicine containing dihydroergotoxine in the National Register of Medicines 2019 or 2021, and Redergin is not in the ALIMS lists of authorisations and renewals from 2019 to 2026.
  • In 2013 the European Medicines Agency (EMA) concluded that the risks of ergot-derived medicines, including dihydroergotoxine, outweigh the benefits in the treatment of cognitive and circulatory complaints. Consult a doctor about treatment.
  • This page is for information only and is not an offer to sell the medicine.

Redergin is the name of a medicine containing dihydroergotoxine (also known as co-dergocrine) – a mixture of hydrogenated ergot alkaloids. It was formerly used in elderly people for declining memory and concentration and for circulatory disorders. Redergin does not contain B vitamins – such claims found online are not correct.

In 2013 the European Medicines Agency (EMA) reviewed ergot derivatives (dihydroergocristine, dihydroergotamine, dihydroergocryptine, dihydroergotoxine and nicergoline). For dihydroergotoxine the European Commission decision was issued on 18 December 2013 and is binding in all EU countries. The information on this page comes from official EMA and ALIMS documents.

What is Redergin, why is it not available in Serbia and what is important to know today?

Key facts about the medicine

Medicine nameRedergin

Status in the EUuse for cognitive and circulatory indications restricted by the 2013 Commission decision

Why did EMA restrict ergot derivatives?

According to the opinion of the Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) of 27 June 2013, confirmed on 24 October 2013 after re-examination requested by a dihydroergotoxine manufacturer, the risks outweigh the benefits for the following indications:

  • symptomatic treatment of chronic cognitive and neurosensory impairment in the elderly (excluding Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias)
  • add-on treatment of intermittent claudication (leg pain when walking) in peripheral arterial disease
  • add-on treatment of Raynaud’s syndrome
  • add-on treatment of vision loss and visual field disturbances of vascular origin and acute vascular retinopathy
  • prevention of migraine, orthostatic hypotension and veno-lymphatic insufficiency

The reasons are the risk of fibrosis (thickening and scarring of heart valves, lungs, pleura or retroperitoneum), which can be serious and irreversible, and the risk of ergotism (symptoms of ergot poisoning, such as severe narrowing of blood vessels), with very limited evidence of benefit for these indications.

What does EMA advise patients who used such medicines?

Patients who used ergot derivatives for these indications should review their treatment with their doctor at a routine, non-urgent appointment. The medicine should not be changed abruptly or obtained from abroad without medical advice.

Important safety information

  • Ergot derivatives can cause fibrosis (heart valves, lungs, pleura, retroperitoneum), which is hard to recognise and may be irreversible.
  • Symptoms of ergotism include severe narrowing of blood vessels with cold, pale or painful fingers, chest or abdominal pain.
  • Because of these risks the medicine should not be taken without medical supervision, and any combination with other medicines should be checked with a doctor or pharmacist.

What is available in Serbia?

No medicine containing dihydroergotoxine is currently authorised in Serbia. Memory and concentration problems in elderly people, as well as circulatory disorders, need a medical assessment of the cause – treatment is chosen according to the diagnosis.

OptionWhat it isNote
Examination by a GP or neurologistassessment of the cause of declining memory and concentrationnecessary before any treatment; the cause may be a treatable condition
Authorised medicines for dementiamedicines with other active substances, prescription-onlyprescribed by a specialist after diagnosis
Control of blood pressure and risk factorsmeasuring blood pressure, blood sugar and lipidsimportant for the health of blood vessels in the brain and legs

The choice of treatment is always made by a doctor. Food supplements "for memory and circulation" are not a substitute for medical assessment and treatment.

When to seek medical help immediately?

  • sudden weakness or numbness of one side of the body, speech or vision problems, facial drooping
  • sudden confusion or loss of consciousness
  • cold, pale or bluish fingers with severe pain
  • chest pain, difficulty breathing or swollen legs

Pharmacist's advice

If you used Redergin in the past, do not try to obtain it from abroad – since the 2013 EMA decision such medicines are no longer recommended for cognitive and circulatory complaints. Ask your doctor what is best for you.

For elderly people taking several medicines, it helps to go through the complete list of treatments with a doctor or pharmacist once a year to avoid unnecessary or risky combinations.

Frequently asked questions

Can Redergin be bought in Serbia?

No. Redergin has no valid marketing authorisation in Serbia, and there is no medicine containing dihydroergotoxine in the National Register of Medicines 2021.

Does Redergin contain B vitamins?

No. The active substance of Redergin is dihydroergotoxine (co-dergocrine), a mixture of hydrogenated ergot alkaloids. Claims that it is a combination with B-complex vitamins are not correct.

Why are dihydroergotoxine medicines no longer recommended for memory and circulation?

In 2013 EMA concluded that the evidence of benefit for these indications is very limited and that there is a risk of serious fibrosis and ergotism. The risks therefore outweigh the benefits and such use is restricted in the EU.

What can replace Redergin?

There is no medicine with the same active substance in Serbia. Treatment depends on the cause – memory problems need an assessment by a doctor or neurologist, who will decide on appropriate treatment.
