ProtoTens is primarily a nutritional combination of magnesium, vitamins and L-tryptophan. Magnesium and the included vitamins have clearly defined roles in normal nervous system function, psychological function, energy metabolism and muscle function.

The presence of L-tryptophan does not mean that the product can replace an antidepressant, anti-anxiety medicine or insomnia treatment. Persistent insomnia, pronounced low mood, panic attacks or impaired everyday functioning requires medical assessment.

The most important risk is combining the product with medicines or supplements that increase serotonergic activity. Particular caution is required with SSRI and SNRI antidepressants, MAO inhibitors, certain migraine medicines, tramadol, dextromethorphan and St John’s wort.

Supplementation cannot compensate for chronic sleep deprivation, irregular meals, excessive caffeine consumption or an underlying condition such as anaemia, thyroid dysfunction or depression.
