What is L-tryptophan?

L-tryptophan is one of the essential proteinogenic amino acids. “Essential” means that the body cannot produce sufficient amounts of this amino acid itself and must obtain it through the diet.

What is the relationship between tryptophan, serotonin and melatonin?

L-tryptophan is the initial substrate in a biochemical pathway in which serotonin can be produced through 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP). Serotonin can subsequently serve as a precursor for melatonin.

This metabolic pathway explains why tryptophan is frequently discussed in relation to sleep and mood, but it does not automatically mean that L-tryptophan supplementation treats insomnia, anxiety or depression.
