Hops and soy contain botanical components used in supplements for women experiencing hormonal changes. The soy extract is standardised to isoflavones, also known as phytoestrogens. Phytoestrogens are not hormones, but may have oestrogen-like activity, which is why this product is not intended for women with oestrogen-dependent tumours.
Valerian, hops and melatonin form the evening part of the formula. Because of the potential sedating effect, the product should be taken shortly before bedtime rather than during the day when driving, operating machinery or full concentration is required.
The public composition lists 0.5 mg of melatonin. This is below the 1 mg amount required for the authorised health claim that melatonin contributes to reducing the time needed to fall asleep. Faster sleep onset, prevention of night waking or deep restorative sleep should therefore not be guaranteed.
