Opatanol 1 mg/mL is an eye-drop medicine containing the active substance olopatadine. It belongs to the group of antiallergic medicines and is used to treat the ocular signs and symptoms of seasonal allergic conjunctivitis.

Allergens such as pollen, house dust and animal fur may cause itching, redness, watering and swelling of the surface of the eye. Olopatadine reduces the intensity of the allergic reaction. The medicine should be used only as prescribed by a doctor.

Opatanol – what is it used for and how should it be administered?

What is Opatanol used for?

The medicine is used to relieve ocular symptoms of seasonal allergic conjunctivitis, including:

  • pronounced itching of the eyes;
  • eye redness;
  • increased watering;
  • stinging and discomfort;
  • swelling of the eye surface or eyelids.

Opatanol is not an antibiotic and is not intended for the independent treatment of bacterial or viral conjunctivitis. Purulent discharge, severe pain, sensitivity to light or a sudden change in vision require an ophthalmological examination.

How should Opatanol be used?

The usual recommended dose for adults and children aged 3 years and over is one drop in the affected eye or eyes twice daily, in the morning and evening, approximately eight hours apart.

If considered necessary by the doctor, treatment may continue for up to four months. The doctor determines the duration of treatment and whether the medicine should be used in one or both eyes.

  • Wash and dry your hands before use.
  • Tilt your head backwards and gently pull down the lower eyelid.
  • Instil one drop into the pocket between the eyelid and the eye.
  • Do not allow the bottle tip to touch the eye, eyelids, eyelashes, skin or any other surface.
  • Close the bottle immediately after use.
  • Use the medicine only as eye drops.

If a dose is missed: use it when remembered unless it is nearly time for the next dose. Do not use a double dose.

Important warning

Opatanol is used for allergic eye conditions and should not be used for every case of redness or itching without identifying the cause. Bacterial, viral and allergic conjunctivitis require different treatment approaches.

Seek medical advice if symptoms become worse, do not improve with treatment or are accompanied by pain, purulent discharge, marked sensitivity to light or a change in vision.

When should Opatanol not be used?

Do not use the medicine if you are allergic to olopatadine or any of its other ingredients.

Do not use Opatanol in children under 3 years of age because its safety and effectiveness have not been established in this age group.

Contact lenses

Opatanol contains the preservative benzalkonium chloride, which may irritate the eye and discolour soft contact lenses.

  • Remove soft contact lenses before instilling the drops.
  • Wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting them.
  • Do not wear lenses when the eye is severely red, painful or inflamed unless advised otherwise by an ophthalmologist.

Use with other eye drops and ointments

When other topical eye medicines are used, leave an interval of at least five minutes between products. Eye ointments should be applied last.

Special warnings and precautions

Benzalkonium chloride may further irritate dry eyes and a damaged cornea. Patients with pronounced dry eye or a corneal disorder should inform their ophthalmologist before frequent or prolonged use.

The medicine contains phosphates. In patients with severely damaged corneas, cloudy patches caused by calcium accumulation have been reported very rarely during treatment with phosphate-containing eye drops.

Vision may be temporarily blurred immediately after use. Do not drive or operate machinery until your vision is completely clear.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Information about the use of ocular olopatadine during pregnancy is limited. Its use during pregnancy is not recommended without an individual medical assessment.

Opatanol should not be used while breastfeeding. Women who are pregnant, breastfeeding or planning a pregnancy should consult a doctor before using the medicine.

Possible side effects

Common side effects may include:

  • eye pain or irritation;
  • dry eye;
  • an unusual sensation or discomfort in the eye;
  • headache;
  • fatigue;
  • dryness of the nasal lining;
  • an altered sense of taste.

Uncommon effects may include blurred or reduced vision, itching, redness or watering of the eye, sensitivity to light, a foreign-body sensation, eye discharge, eyelid swelling, dizziness, a runny nose or dry skin.

When should immediate medical help be sought?

Stop using the medicine and seek immediate medical help if any of the following occurs:

  • swelling of the face, lips, tongue, throat or eyelids;
  • difficulty breathing or swallowing;
  • a sudden deterioration or loss of vision;
  • severe eye pain;
  • marked sensitivity to light;
  • heavy or purulent eye discharge;
  • a severe or widespread hypersensitivity reaction.

If more medicine has been used than prescribed

Rinse the eye with lukewarm water and do not instil any more drops until the next scheduled dose. Contact a doctor if the bottle contents have been swallowed or unusual symptoms occur.

How to store Opatanol

  • Keep out of the sight and reach of children.
  • The medicine does not require special storage conditions.
  • Keep the bottle tightly closed.
  • Discard the bottle 28 days after it is first opened.
  • Write the opening date on the bottle or carton.
  • Return unused medicine to a pharmacy that collects pharmaceutical waste.

Composition

Each millilitre of solution contains 1 mg of olopatadine as olopatadine hydrochloride.

The other ingredients include benzalkonium chloride, sodium chloride, disodium phosphate dodecahydrate, hydrochloric acid and/or sodium hydroxide for pH adjustment and purified water.

Pharmacist’s advice

Do not touch the eye or eyelashes with the bottle tip and do not share the drops with another person. When using several eye products, observe the recommended interval so that one drop does not wash out another.

Artificial tears may provide additional support for dryness and irritation, but they do not replace Opatanol or treat the underlying allergic reaction. Ask a pharmacist or ophthalmologist about the appropriate interval.
