Olynth 1 mg/mL nasal drops contains xylometazoline hydrochloride, a sympathomimetic that narrows the blood vessels of the nasal lining and thus reduces swelling (nasal decongestant, ATC R01AA07). The effect usually starts 5 to 10 minutes after use and is felt as easier breathing through the nose.
The medicine is intended for adults and children over 12 years and must not be used in children under 12 years. The medicine comes in a 10 mL bottle and contains benzalkonium chloride as a preservative.

What is Olynth used for?
According to the patient leaflet, Olynth is used to relieve symptoms of:
- congestion (swelling) of the nasal mucosa
- chronic and allergic rhinitis, including hay fever
- sinusitis
How is it used and dosed?
Unless prescribed otherwise by a doctor, adults and children over 12 years instil 2–3 drops into each nostril as needed, 2 to 3 times a day. The maximum treatment duration is 7 days.
- Tilt the head slightly back for instillation.
- To prevent nasal secretions being drawn into the pipette, release the rubber bulb only after the pipette has been removed from the nose.
- Wipe the pipette after each use.
- Do not exceed the recommended dose and duration. In chronic complaints, use only under medical supervision.
Special patient groups
- Children under 12: the medicine must not be used; a 0.5 mg/mL strength exists for children aged 6 to 12.
- Avoid prolonged use and overdose, especially in children.
- People with glaucoma (especially angle-closure), heart disease, phaeochromocytoma, metabolic disorders or an enlarged prostate: only after a benefit-risk assessment.
Contraindications – when the medicine must not be used
Olynth must not be used:
- in hypersensitivity to xylometazoline, benzalkonium chloride or any of the excipients
- in dry inflammation of the nasal mucosa with crusting (rhinitis sicca)
- after transsphenoidal hypophysectomy or other surgery exposing the dura mater
- in children under 12 years
Precautions and warnings
The medicine may only be used after careful benefit-risk assessment in patients:
- treated with MAO inhibitors (e.g. tranylcypromine, moclobemide) or other medicines that can raise blood pressure
- with raised eye pressure, especially angle-closure glaucoma
- with severe heart and circulatory disease (e.g. long QT syndrome, coronary artery disease, hypertension)
- with phaeochromocytoma (adrenal gland tumour)
- with metabolic disorders (e.g. overactive thyroid, diabetes)
- with an enlarged prostate
Prolonged use and overdose can cause reactive hyperaemia, chronic swelling (rhinitis medicamentosa) and atrophy of the nasal mucosa. Benzalkonium chloride (0.4 mg per 1 mL) may irritate the nasal mucosa.
Interactions with other medicines, alcohol and food
Concomitant use with MAO inhibitors (e.g. tranylcypromine, moclobemide), tricyclic antidepressants or other medicines that can raise blood pressure may increase blood pressure due to effects on the heart and circulation. Alcohol may further reduce the ability to drive if the medicine is used for longer or at higher doses.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Olynth should not be used during pregnancy, as there are insufficient data on use in pregnant women, nor during breastfeeding, as it is not known whether the active substance passes into breast milk.
Driving and using machines
With longer use or higher doses, effects on the heart, circulation and nervous system cannot be excluded, so the ability to drive and use machines may be reduced. Alcohol may increase this effect.
Possible side effects
- Mild irritation – burning or dryness of the nasal mucosa, especially in sensitive people.
- Common (up to 1 in 10): increased swelling of the mucosa as the effect wears off (reactive hyperaemia).
- Uncommon (up to 1 in 100): hypersensitivity reactions (rash, itching, angioedema), nosebleed, sneezing, palpitations, fast pulse, raised blood pressure.
- Rare (up to 1 in 1,000): headache, insomnia or tiredness.
- Very rare (up to 1 in 10,000): hallucinations and convulsions (mainly in children), heart rhythm disorders.
- Prolonged or frequent use can cause rhinitis medicamentosa after as little as five days of treatment, and later permanent damage to the mucosa with crusting.
Suspected side effects can be reported to your doctor, pharmacist or the Medicines and Medical Devices Agency of Serbia (ALIMS).
Overdose, missed dose and stopping treatment
- Overdose: tell a doctor immediately or go to the nearest hospital and take the medicine or leaflet with you. Changes in pupil size, nausea, vomiting, pallor or bluish skin, temperature disturbances, heart rhythm and blood pressure disorders, breathing problems, drowsiness up to coma, agitation and convulsions may occur. In children, overdose may be accompanied by convulsions, coma, slow heart rate and stopped breathing.
- Missed dose: never take a double dose; continue use as described in the leaflet.
- Stopping treatment: with rebound swelling, the medicine can first be stopped in one nostril and, once symptoms resolve, in the other.
When to seek medical help immediately?
- swelling of the face, tongue or throat with difficulty breathing, rash or severe itching
- palpitations, irregular or very fast heartbeat, severe headache or a sudden rise in blood pressure
- hallucinations, convulsions, unusual drowsiness or slow breathing, especially in a child
- a child has received more doses than recommended or has swallowed the solution
Pharmacist's advice
Instil the drops with your head slightly tilted back and wipe the pipette after each use. Do not use them for longer than 7 days; if your nose is still blocked after that, see a doctor rather than extending use.
Write the opening date on the pack – an opened bottle should be used within 12 weeks. If you take medicines for depression or blood pressure, or have glaucoma or an enlarged prostate, ask a doctor or pharmacist before use.

Frequently asked questions
Can an 8-year-old use Olynth 1 mg/mL drops?
No. According to the leaflet approved by ALIMS, Olynth 1 mg/mL nasal drops are intended for adults and children over 12; they must not be used in children under 12. A lower strength (0.5 mg/mL) exists for children aged 6 to 12.
How long can I use Olynth drops?
No more than 7 days. Longer or more frequent use can cause swelling of the nasal lining that worsens with use of the medicine (rhinitis medicamentosa) and, in the long term, damage to the mucosa.
Why is my nose even more blocked when the drops wear off?
The leaflet states that increased swelling of the mucosa often occurs as the effect wears off (reactive hyperaemia). This is why the medicine should not be used longer than recommended; stopping can be made easier by leaving out one nostril first.
Can I use Olynth if I have high blood pressure?
In severe heart and circulatory disease, including hypertension, the medicine may only be used after careful assessment of benefit and risk – ask your doctor before use.
