Nipam 5 mg contains nitrazepam, a benzodiazepine medicine with sedative and hypnotic effects. It reduces the time needed to fall asleep and prolongs sleep duration.
It is authorised exclusively for the short-term treatment of severe insomnia in adults when the condition causes marked psychological or physical exhaustion and interferes with normal daytime functioning. Nipam may help a patient sleep, but it does not treat the underlying cause of insomnia.
Nipam must not be used without medical supervision and is not intended for online sale. It can cause tolerance, physical and psychological dependence, memory impairment, daytime drowsiness and withdrawal symptoms.
Combining it with opioids, alcohol or other sedatives may cause profound sedation, respiratory depression, coma and death.
Nipam 5 mg – indication, dosage and safety information
What is Nipam used for?
Nipam is authorised for the short-term treatment of severe insomnia. It should not be presented as a routine treatment for everyday stress, temporary nervousness, anxiety or tension.
The possible cause of insomnia should be assessed before a benzodiazepine is prescribed. Potential causes include depression, anxiety, sleep apnoea, pain, reflux, other medical conditions, substance use, shift work and poor sleep habits.
How is Nipam taken?

Swallow the tablet with water or another non-alcoholic drink immediately before bedtime. The patient should be able to sleep without interruption for at least 7–8 hours.
Do not increase, reduce or repeat the dose without medical instruction.
Duration, tolerance and dependence
Treatment is short term and generally should not last longer than four weeks, including gradual dose reduction.
Longer use may result in reduced effectiveness, tolerance, physical or psychological dependence, increasing doses and difficulty stopping treatment.
Abrupt discontinuation may cause rebound insomnia, anxiety, tension, restlessness, sweating, headache, irritability, behavioural changes, tingling, sensitivity to light and sound, hallucinations or seizures.
The dose must be reduced gradually according to a medical plan.
When must Nipam not be used?
- allergy to nitrazepam, another benzodiazepine or an excipient;
- serious lung disease or breathing problems;
- sleep apnoea;
- myasthenia gravis;
- severe liver impairment;
- psychosis or a personality disorder;
- phobic or obsessive conditions;
- patients under 18 years of age.
Alcohol, opioids and other sedatives
Alcohol must not be consumed during treatment. It may dangerously increase drowsiness, impaired coordination and respiratory depression.
Tell the doctor if you use opioids, antidepressants, antipsychotics, anti-anxiety medicines, other sleeping medicines, sedating antihistamines, antiepileptics, anaesthetics, St John’s wort, valerian, melatonin or any other product with a sedative effect.
The combination of Nipam and an opioid should be considered only when other treatment options are unsuitable. The lowest effective doses and shortest possible duration must be used.
Driving and operating machinery
Nipam may cause drowsiness, slower reactions, reduced attention, confusion, dizziness, poor coordination and double vision.
Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how the medicine affects you. The risk is greater after alcohol, other sedatives or insufficient sleep.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Nipam should be used during pregnancy only when a doctor considers it essential. Use in late pregnancy or during labour may cause low body temperature, reduced muscle tone and breathing or feeding difficulties in the newborn.
Prolonged use during the final trimester may cause dependence and withdrawal symptoms in the newborn. Nitrazepam may pass into breast milk, so use during breastfeeding should be avoided.
Possible side effects
Common effects include daytime drowsiness, reduced attention, confusion, tiredness, headache, dizziness, muscle weakness, poor coordination, double vision and depressed mood.
Less common effects include low blood pressure, digestive discomfort, nausea, rash, visual or speech disturbances, changes in sexual desire and urinary retention.
Memory loss, breathing problems, dependence, withdrawal symptoms, jaundice, muscle spasms and an increased risk of falls and fractures in older patients may also occur.
Rare paradoxical reactions include aggression, agitation, restlessness, irritability, rage, nightmares, hallucinations and unusual behaviour.
- slow, shallow or difficult breathing;
- an inability to wake, extreme drowsiness or loss of consciousness;
- swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat;
- a widespread rash, blistering or peeling skin;
- severe aggression, hallucinations or dangerous behavioural changes;
- a seizure;
- an overdose or simultaneous use with an opioid or substantial alcohol intake.
