Nasic for children nasal spray (nasic® za decu, 0.5 mg/mL + 50 mg/mL, nasal spray, solution) is a medicine that contains two active substances: xylometazoline hydrochloride, which narrows the blood vessels of the nasal mucosa and reduces swelling, and dexpanthenol, a derivative of pantothenic acid that promotes healing and protects the mucosal surface. According to the approved leaflet, it is intended for children aged 6 to 12 years to relieve a blocked nose in inflammation of the nasal mucosa and to support healing of mucosal damage.
Each spray delivers 0.05 mg xylometazoline hydrochloride and 5 mg dexpanthenol. The medicine comes in a dark glass bottle with a metering pump (10 mL) and is available without a prescription. For adults and children over 12 a stronger form is available – nasic® 1 mg/mL + 50 mg/mL.
Important warning
- Supply status in Serbia: available without a medical prescription (according to the leaflet approved by ALIMS).
- Must not be used in infants and children under 6 years.

- Do not exceed the recommended dose; if there is no improvement after 3 days or symptoms get worse, consult a doctor.
- Use the medicine only as described in the official leaflet and as advised by a doctor or pharmacist.

What is Nasic for children used for?
According to the patient leaflet and the Summary of Product Characteristics, the medicine is used for:
- relief of nasal congestion during inflammation of the nasal mucosa (rhinitis)
- improving the healing of damage to the nasal mucosa
- relief of non-allergic inflammation of the nasal mucosa (vasomotor rhinitis)
- treatment of difficult nasal breathing after nasal surgery
The medicine is intended for children aged 6 to 12 years.
How is it used and dosed?
Children aged 6 to 12 years: as needed, up to 3 times a day one spray into each nostril, unless the doctor has prescribed otherwise. The dose depends on individual sensitivity and the clinical picture; the recommended dose must not be exceeded.
- Route: nasal use, after blowing the nose; the patient should be seated during use, and small children should be held on the lap.
- Before first use, press the pump several times into the air until an even mist appears; if the spray has not been used for a few days, press the pump at least once into the air before use.
- Insert the nozzle into the nostril as upright as possible and press once into each nostril; breathe in gently through the nose while spraying.
- After each use, wipe the tip with a paper tissue and replace the protective cap; the spray should be used by one person only.
- Duration: no more than 5 consecutive days unless advised by a doctor; use may be repeated only after a break of several days. The duration of treatment in children should always be agreed with a doctor.
Special patient groups
- Children: the medicine is intended for children aged 6 to 12 years; it must not be used in infants and children under 6. In children, prolonged use and higher than recommended doses should especially be avoided.
- People with chronic rhinitis: use should be under medical supervision because of the risk of damage to the nasal mucosa.
- Elderly people and people with impaired kidney or liver function: the leaflet does not state any specific dose adjustment; if you have heart disease, high blood pressure or an enlarged prostate, consult a doctor before use.
Contraindications – when the medicine must not be used
- allergy to xylometazoline hydrochloride, dexpanthenol or any of the excipients (including the preservative benzalkonium chloride)
- dry inflammation of the nasal mucosa with crusts (rhinitis sicca)
- after surgical removal of the pituitary gland through the nose (transsphenoidal hypophysectomy) or other operations exposing the dura mater
- infants and children under 6 years
Precautions and warnings
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before use if you:
- take MAO inhibitors or other medicines that may increase blood pressure
- have increased eye pressure, especially narrow-angle glaucoma
- have severe heart or blood vessel disease (e.g. coronary heart disease), high blood pressure or a heart condition such as a prolonged QT interval
- have phaeochromocytoma (a tumour of the adrenal medulla)
- have an overactive thyroid, diabetes or porphyria
- have an enlarged prostate
The medicine contains 0.02 mg benzalkonium chloride per dose, which may cause irritation or swelling of the nasal mucosa, especially with longer use.
Interactions with other medicines, alcohol and food
Concomitant use with MAO inhibitors (e.g. tranylcypromine) and tricyclic antidepressants, as well as with medicines that raise blood pressure, should be avoided, because the combined cardiovascular effect may lead to increased blood pressure. Tell your doctor or pharmacist about all medicines you take. The leaflet does not describe interactions with food or alcohol.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
The medicine should not be used during pregnancy, as there are insufficient data on the use of xylometazoline hydrochloride in pregnant women. Use should be avoided during breastfeeding, as it is not known whether xylometazoline passes into breast milk. No adverse effects on fertility are known.
Driving and using machines
When used as directed, the medicine has no or negligible influence on the ability to drive and use machines.
Possible side effects
- Uncommon (up to 1 in 100 patients): hypersensitivity reactions – rash, itching, swelling of the face and tongue (angioedema); in that case stop using the medicine and seek medical help immediately.
- Rare (up to 1 in 1,000): palpitations, fast heartbeat, high blood pressure.
- Very rare (up to 1 in 10,000): restlessness, insomnia, drowsiness, headache, hallucinations (especially in children), heart rhythm disorders, increased swelling of the nasal mucosa and nosebleeds, seizures (especially in children).
- Not known: burning or dryness of the nasal mucosa, sneezing.
Suspected side effects can be reported to a doctor, pharmacist or the Medicines and Medical Devices Agency of Serbia (ALIMS).
Overdose, missed dose and stopping treatment
- Overdose or accidental swallowing may cause constricted or dilated pupils, fever, sweating, pallor, bluish lips, nausea, seizures, heart rhythm disorders, a fall or rise in blood pressure, breathing problems, drowsiness and loss of consciousness – contact a doctor immediately.
- Missed dose: do not use a double dose; continue treatment as described in the leaflet.
- Stopping treatment: use only while symptoms last, for no more than 5 consecutive days without medical advice.
When to seek medical help immediately?
- swelling of the face, tongue or throat, rash or difficulty breathing (allergic reaction)
- palpitations, irregular heartbeat or markedly raised blood pressure
- accidental swallowing or use of a higher dose, especially by a child (drowsiness, slowed breathing, seizures)
- severe headache, high fever, purulent or bloody nasal discharge, or symptoms lasting longer than 3 days without improvement
Pharmacist's advice
Use the spray only for as many days as really necessary – at most 5 days in a row – and no more than 3 times a day. If you feel you cannot breathe through your nose without the spray, this may be a sign that the mucosa has become used to it; in that case talk to a doctor or pharmacist.
Make sure you give your child the “for children” form (0.5 mg/mL) and not the stronger adult spray. Help the child blow the nose before use and write the opening date on the bottle – an opened bottle may be used for up to 12 weeks.
