Molicor contains molsidomine, a vasodilator used in cardiology. It widens the blood vessels of the heart and improves the heart’s oxygen supply, thereby preventing chest pain caused by heart disease (angina pectoris).
In Serbia it is authorised as Molicor®, 2 mg, tablets (Union-Medic d.o.o. Novi Sad), in packs of 30 and 60 tablets. It is used for preventive treatment of angina pectoris – it is not suitable for stopping an angina attack that has already started.
Important warning
- Dispensing status: prescription-only medicine.
- Must not be taken together with sildenafil, tadalafil or vardenafil (erectile dysfunction medicines) or riociguat – a sudden, dangerous fall in blood pressure may occur.
- Molicor does not stop an angina attack that has already started.
- Not recommended during breast-feeding; not to be taken with marked low blood pressure or shock.
- This page is for information only and is not an offer to buy the medicine online. Read the package leaflet before use.

What is Molicor used for?
According to the package leaflet, Molicor is recommended as preventive treatment of angina pectoris (prophylaxis of angina attacks). It is not suitable for treating an angina attack in progress.
How is it taken and dosed?
The doctor sets the dose according to the type and severity of angina and the level of physical activity. According to the leaflet and the summary of product characteristics:
| Type of angina | Dosage |
|---|---|
| Stable angina pectoris | ½ to 1 tablet 3 times daily – morning, noon and evening (3–6 mg daily) |
| Other forms and more severe stable angina | 1 tablet 4 times daily (8 mg daily) |
| Unstable angina | the fourth tablet is preferably taken at bedtime |
- The recommended dose is usually 3–8 mg daily, most often with breakfast, lunch and dinner.
- Swallow the tablet with a large glass of water without chewing or sucking; the tablet can be divided into equal doses.
- Your doctor decides how long treatment lasts.
Special patient groups
- Liver disease: the dose is increased gradually under medical supervision.
- Elderly patients and patients with low blood pressure or fluid loss: caution is needed because of a possible fall in blood pressure, especially with other medicines that lower blood pressure or widen blood vessels.
Contraindications – when the medicine must not be used
Do not take Molicor if you:
- are allergic to molsidomine or any excipient;
- have a marked fall in blood pressure or are in shock (sudden significant discomfort or dizziness);
- take erectile dysfunction medicines of the phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor group (sildenafil, tadalafil, vardenafil) – at least 24 hours should pass after their use;
- take riociguat or other soluble guanylate cyclase stimulators or nitric oxide donors;
- are breast-feeding (not recommended).
Warnings and precautions
During treatment tell your doctor if you feel unwell – this may be due to a fall in blood pressure, especially if you are elderly or take other medicines that lower blood pressure or widen blood vessels. Tell your doctor if you have liver disease.
According to the summary of product characteristics, molsidomine can be used with beta-blockers, while combined use with long-acting organic nitrates is not logical because of their similar mechanism of action. Combined use with ergot alkaloids is not recommended. The medicine contains lactose.
Interactions with other medicines, food and drink
- Contraindicated: sildenafil, tadalafil, vardenafil (impotence treatment) and riociguat (pulmonary arterial hypertension) – significant and sudden fall in blood pressure, fainting or heart attack;
- Caution: other blood pressure medicines, nitrates and other vasodilators, tricyclic antidepressants and neuroleptics – greater fall in blood pressure (especially on standing);
- dapoxetine (treatment of premature ejaculation) – higher risk of dizziness or fainting;
- ergot alkaloids (some migraine medicines) – possible opposing effect; combined use is not recommended.
Drinking alcohol during treatment is not recommended, as it may increase the effect of the medicine and cause a fall in blood pressure.
Pregnancy and breast-feeding
- Pregnancy: there are insufficient clinical data – as a precaution it is best not to use molsidomine during pregnancy (SmPC); consult your doctor.
- Breast-feeding: use of the medicine is not recommended during breast-feeding.
Driving and using machines
Some side effects (dizziness, headache, fall in blood pressure) may affect concentration and reactions, so caution is needed when driving or using machines.
Possible side effects
- Headache and a slight fall in blood pressure at the start of treatment – these usually disappear on their own within a few days.
- Exceptionally: fall in blood pressure on standing (possibly with dizziness), fainting, digestive disorders, itching.
- Rarely: reduced platelet count (thrombocytopenia).
Report any suspected side effect to your doctor, pharmacist or ALIMS.
Overdose, missed dose and stopping treatment
- Overdose: a serious fall in blood pressure may occur – inform your doctor or pharmacist immediately.
- Missed dose: never take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
- Stopping treatment: consult your doctor before stopping the medicine.
When to seek medical help immediately?
- chest pain that does not go away at rest (Molicor does not stop an angina attack);
- fainting, severe dizziness or a feeling of collapse;
- a sudden fall in blood pressure after taking an erectile dysfunction medicine or alcohol;
- unexplained bruising or bleeding (possible fall in platelets).
Pharmacist's advice
Molicor works preventively – take it regularly at the times set by your doctor (usually with breakfast, lunch and dinner), even when you have no pain. For chest pain that has already started, use the medicine your doctor prescribed for attacks, as Molicor does not stop an attack.
Before buying any “potency” product or taking an erectile dysfunction medicine, always consult your doctor or pharmacist – combination with molsidomine can cause a dangerous fall in blood pressure. At the start of treatment get up slowly and do not drink alcohol.
