What should you know before drinking Fructus St John's wort tea – preparation and interactions with medicines?

Fructus St John's wort (Serbian: Fructus kantarion) is a herbal tea from the Classic line of the producer Fructus from Bačka Palanka, Serbia. The manufacturer describes it as a herbal tea made from St John's wort herb, and it consists solely of St John's wort herb (100%) – the aerial parts of the plant, with nothing added.

St John's wort is one of the best-known plants in folk use, but it is also the plant with the most known interactions with medicines. In its monograph on St John's wort herb, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) states that St John's wort preparations can speed up the breakdown of many medicines and reduce their effect. This tea therefore calls for more care than ordinary herbal teas.

The pack contains 20 filter bags of 1.5 g (30 g). The tea is made with boiling water, and the bag is left to steep covered for 5 minutes.

Key benefits:

  • Single-herb tea – St John's wort herb 100%.
  • No added flavourings and no tea-plant leaf.
  • 1.5 g filter bags for easy portioning per cup.
  • Short preparation – 5 minutes in a covered cup.
  • Serbian producer Fructus, Classic line.

How to use

Preparation according to the manufacturer:

  • Pour 200 ml of boiling water over one filter bag and cover.
  • Leave for 5 minutes.
  • Remove the bag and sweeten to taste if you like.

Who is it for?

The tea is intended for adults who take no medicines, or who have checked with their doctor or pharmacist that St John's wort does not affect their treatment. EMA does not recommend oral use of St John's wort in people under 18, nor during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Important notes

  • St John's wort can reduce the effect of many medicines. According to EMA, it must not be combined with coumarin-type anticoagulants (e.g. warfarin), ciclosporin, tacrolimus, sirolimus and everolimus, HIV medicines (protease inhibitors, NRTIs), or irinotecan, imatinib and other cytostatic medicines.
  • It can make hormonal contraception (pills, patches, rings) less reliable – EMA advises using an additional method of contraception.
  • Caution and medical advice are needed with antidepressants (e.g. sertraline, paroxetine), digoxin, simvastatin, alprazolam, midazolam, methadone and amitriptyline.
  • Avoid intense sun exposure and sunbeds while using it; fair-skinned people may be more sensitive to UV light.
  • Tell your doctor that you drink St John's wort before any planned surgery.
  • Not for people under 18, during pregnancy and breastfeeding, or in case of hypersensitivity to St John's wort.

Pharmacist's advice:

Before you start drinking St John's wort regularly, make a list of all the medicines you take – including contraceptive pills, blood thinners, heart and cholesterol medicines, antidepressants and sleeping pills – and check it with a pharmacist. Interactions can occur even if the tea is only drunk now and then.

If you already drink St John's wort and are starting a new treatment, be sure to tell your doctor. For a relaxing cup without these restrictions, you can choose chamomile or linden.
