Fluimucil 100 mg is a medicine supplied as granules for oral solution. Each sachet contains 100 mg of acetylcysteine. It belongs to a group of expectorant medicines known as mucolytics, which reduce the viscosity of bronchial mucus and make it easier to cough up.

Important warning
Fluimucil 100 is not intended for a dry cough without mucus. It must not be given to children under 2 years of age. Do not combine it on your own with cough suppressants, as thinned mucus may be retained in the airways.

Fluimucil 100 mg – uses, dosage and important warnings

What is Fluimucil 100 used for?

Fluimucil 100 is used in acute and chronic respiratory conditions associated with excessive production of thick, viscous mucus and difficulty coughing it up, including:

  • acute bronchitis;
  • chronic bronchitis and its exacerbations;
  • bronchiectasis;
  • pulmonary emphysema;
  • cystic fibrosis.

Acetylcysteine acts on the structure of thick mucus, making it less viscous and easier to expectorate. It does not treat the underlying cause of a respiratory illness and does not replace antibiotics or other treatment prescribed by a doctor.

How is the medicine prepared and taken?

Dissolve the required number of sachets in half a glass of water. Stir with a spoon if necessary and drink the solution without unnecessary delay. The prepared solution should not be mixed with other medicines.

For children over 2 years of age, the prepared solution may be given with a spoon or in a feeding bottle.

Age group Single dose Frequency
Adults 2 sachets 2–3 times daily
Children aged 6–12 years 2 sachets Twice daily
Children aged 2–6 years 1 sachet Three times daily

For acute symptoms, treatment is generally continued for 5 to 10 days. Contact a doctor if symptoms persist, recur more frequently or worsen. Treatment lasting longer than 10 days should be prescribed and supervised by a doctor.

When must Fluimucil 100 not be used?

  • in patients allergic to acetylcysteine or any excipient;
  • in children under 2 years of age;
  • during pregnancy or breastfeeding without a doctor's decision;
  • together with cough suppressants unless specifically directed by a doctor.

When is additional caution required?

Consult a doctor or pharmacist before use if you have bronchial asthma, histamine intolerance, a current or previous stomach or duodenal ulcer, or if you use medicines known to irritate the gastrointestinal mucosa.

At the beginning of treatment, mucus may become thinner and its volume may increase. Medical advice is required if the patient cannot cough up the increased amount of mucus effectively.

Interactions with other medicines

  • Cough suppressants: reduced cough reflex may cause mucus retention.
  • Antibiotics: take antibiotics and acetylcysteine at least 2 hours apart. This restriction does not apply to loracarbef.
  • Activated charcoal: may reduce the effect of Fluimucil 100.
  • Nitroglycerin: combined use may cause a substantial reduction in blood pressure and headache.

Acetylcysteine may interfere with certain laboratory tests for salicylates in blood and ketone bodies in urine. Tell the healthcare professional that you are taking this medicine before testing.

Possible side effects

Uncommon effects include hypersensitivity reactions, headache, ringing in the ears, rapid heartbeat, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, inflammation of the mouth, rash, itching, hives, fever and low blood pressure.

Rare effects include bronchospasm, difficulty breathing and indigestion. Very rare effects include serious allergic reactions and bleeding. Very rare serious skin reactions, including Stevens–Johnson syndrome and Lyell syndrome, have also been reported.

Stop treatment and seek urgent medical help if you experience:
  • difficulty breathing, choking or bronchospasm;
  • swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat;
  • difficulty swallowing;
  • a widespread rash, blisters, skin peeling or mucosal lesions;
  • signs of a serious allergic reaction or unusual bleeding.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Do not use Fluimucil 100 on your own during pregnancy or breastfeeding. It may be used only when prescribed by a doctor and under direct medical supervision.

Pharmacist's advice
Use Fluimucil for a productive cough with thick mucus, not to suppress a dry cough. Maintain an adequate fluid intake unless your doctor has restricted fluids because of another medical condition. If mucus volume increases and the patient cannot cough it up, seek medical advice.

Do not combine Fluimucil with other medicines or supplements containing acetylcysteine or NAC until a doctor or pharmacist has checked the total daily dose.
