Flavamed 15 mg/5 mL oral solution contains ambroxol hydrochloride, an active substance from the group of mucolytics. Ambroxol thins thick mucus in the airways, making it easier to cough up.
It is used to treat productive (wet) cough associated with acute or chronic lung and bronchial diseases, in children from 2 years and in adults. The pack contains a 100 mL bottle of raspberry-flavoured solution and a graduated dosing spoon.
Important warning
- Supply status in Serbia: available without a prescription.
- The medicine must not be used in children under 2 years.
- If a skin rash or lesions of the mucous membranes of the mouth, throat, nose, eyes or genitals appear, stop the medicine immediately and see a doctor.

What is Flavamed oral solution used for?
According to the leaflet, Flavamed oral solution is used to treat productive cough associated with acute or chronic lung and bronchial diseases. It thins mucus, making it easier to cough up.
How is it used and dosed?
Take after meals, using the measuring spoon from the pack, unless the doctor prescribes otherwise:

Special patient groups
- Children under 2 years: must not be used.
- Children aged 2–4 years: persistent or recurrent cough requires a diagnosis before treatment.
- Impaired kidney function or severe liver disease: use only on a doctor's recommendation, as ambroxol breakdown products may accumulate.
- Rare bronchial diseases with increased mucus production (e.g. primary ciliary dyskinesia): only under medical supervision.
Contraindications – when the medicine must not be used
- allergy to ambroxol hydrochloride or any excipient
- children under 2 years
Precautions and warnings
- Severe skin reactions have been reported (erythema multiforme, Stevens-Johnson syndrome/toxic epidermal necrolysis, acute generalised exanthematous pustulosis). If a rash or mucosal lesions appear, stop immediately and see a doctor.
- The medicine contains 1.75 g sorbitol per 5 mL – in hereditary fructose intolerance or sugar intolerance consult a doctor; sorbitol may have a mild laxative effect.
- The medicine contains 5.75 mg benzoic acid per 5 mL.
Interactions with other medicines, alcohol and food
Concomitant use with medicines that suppress the cough reflex (antitussives) in airway diseases with increased mucus production, such as cystic fibrosis or bronchiectasis, may lead to dangerous accumulation of secretions. Tell your doctor about all medicines you take. The medicine is taken after meals.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Ambroxol crosses the placenta. Experience after week 28 of pregnancy has not shown harmful effects on the foetus, but use during pregnancy, especially in the first trimester, is not recommended. Ambroxol passes into breast milk and is not recommended during breastfeeding.
Driving and using machines
There is no evidence of an effect on the ability to drive or use machines; no specific studies have been performed.
Possible side effects
- Common (up to 1 in 10): taste disturbance, nausea, numbness of the mouth and throat.
- Uncommon (up to 1 in 100): vomiting, diarrhoea, indigestion, abdominal pain, dry mouth, fever, mucosal reactions.
- Rare (up to 1 in 1,000): hypersensitivity reactions, rash, urticaria, dry throat.
- Very rare (up to 1 in 10,000): increased salivation.
- Not known: anaphylactic shock, angioedema, itching, severe skin reactions, shortness of breath as a sign of hypersensitivity.
At the first sign of hypersensitivity, stop the medicine immediately. Suspected side effects can be reported to a doctor, pharmacist or ALIMS.
Overdose, missed dose and stopping treatment
- Overdose: no specific symptoms have been reported; observed symptoms match known side effects. Contact a doctor.
- Missed dose: take the next dose as scheduled; do not take a double dose.
- Stopping early: symptoms may get worse.
When to seek medical help immediately?
- rash, blistering, peeling skin or sores on the mucous membranes of the mouth, throat, nose, eyes or genitals
- swelling of the face, lips or throat, difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
- cough with high fever, bloody or purulent sputum or choking
- cough not improving after 4 to 5 days, or persistent/recurrent cough in a child under 4 years
Pharmacist's advice
Flavamed is intended for wet cough where mucus needs to be cleared – do not combine it with a dry-cough syrup without medical advice, as secretions may be retained in the airways.
Take it after meals and always measure the dose with the spoon from the pack, which is marked at 1.25, 2.5 and 5 mL. Use an opened bottle within 6 months.

Frequently asked questions
Is Flavamed for dry or wet cough?
For wet (productive) cough. Ambroxol thins mucus and makes it easier to cough up; dry, irritating cough is not an indication for this medicine.
How much Flavamed oral solution is given to a 3-year-old?
According to the leaflet, children aged 2 to 5 years receive 2.5 mL (half a spoon) 3 times a day, after meals. In children aged 2 to 4 years, persistent or recurrent cough requires a doctor's examination before treatment.
Can Flavamed be taken together with a dry-cough syrup?
Not without medical advice. Medicines that suppress the cough reflex may, together with ambroxol, lead to dangerous accumulation of secretions, especially in diseases with increased mucus production.
How long can Flavamed be used without a doctor?
For a maximum of 4 to 5 days. If the cough does not improve or gets worse, contact a doctor.
