  • Do not use the supplement as self-treatment for anaemia, numbness, balance problems or neurological symptoms.

Pharmacist’s advice

Fatigue alone is not a sufficient reason to start high-dose vitamin B12. Similar symptoms may be caused by iron deficiency, thyroid disorders, poor sleep, infection, depression and many other conditions. When deficiency is suspected, a full blood count and serum vitamin B12 may be appropriate, with folate, ferritin, homocysteine or methylmalonic acid testing when clinically indicated.

Seek professional assessment when tingling or numbness, weakness, balance problems, an inflamed tongue, pallor or memory changes occur. Neurological signs of vitamin B12 deficiency may develop without anaemia, so symptoms should not be masked for months with self-selected supplements.

The sublingual tablet is convenient, but it has not been proven universally superior to an appropriate oral regimen. In pernicious anaemia, gastrointestinal disease, after bariatric surgery or in severe neurological deficiency, the replacement route must be determined by a doctor.

Should the tablet be swallowed whole?
No. It is designed for sublingual administration.

Is it intended for vegans and vegetarians?
People following plant-based diets frequently need a reliable vitamin B12 source. However, the suitability of the complete product for vegans should be confirmed on the current packaging.

Does DUOcobalamin treat pernicious anaemia?
It should not be used independently as treatment for pernicious anaemia. Diagnosis and replacement therapy must be determined by a doctor.
